2000 Civic EX Slips into neutral after starting repeatedly

This morning I went to a parking lot and stopped. I did not put it in park but moved to accelerate and nothing would happen. It sounded like I was in neutral. I put it in reverse and the same thing happened. I turned the car off and restarted and it went fine for few hundred feet and at a stop sign, it did the same thing. Wouldn't go forward or backward.

I re-started again and it went a few hundred feet. I re-started it over and over about 12 times to get to my destination. This all started out of nowhere with no signs of this happening...

The transmission fluid is full and still looks red with no burnt smell. I replaced the filter and fluid a few months ago. The check engine came on for a couple hours about a month ago and went off on its own.

The only other thing I can think of, last week I had a tired fly off my car at about 10 miles an hour when my lug nuts fell off. But nothing to suggest this happening. Any ideas?

Thanks! -John

Automatic trans...sounds like it may be failing.

Yup. Forgot that part. It's automatic.

model/mileage?
Pretty sure this generation of Civics doesn't have a transmission filter. Which brand and type of ATF fluid did you use?

If you have access to a code reader you may be able to locate a code(s) even though the CEL is not on.

The following may or may not help but here is goes:

I had a shop change the fluid and they told me the filter. I figured something like a screen... So I don't know the brand of fluid.

I took the solenoid off and it tested fine. Got clicks and continuity. But I never got power from the plug coming from the engine. When should that plug be sending power?

The factory did not give that car a serviceable transmission filter.

As far as the fluid.....What sort of shop was it? Did it get a transmission flush, with a machine?
Some places can't afford to use the correct manufacturer specified approved fluids. Others can't afford not to.

If it's the solenoid pair I'm thinking of.....The only time either of them would get powered up is when the computer decides one or the other needs to be activated.

this just happened to me 2 months ago .

the problem was the internal filter was clogged even though i use the correct oem fluid and change it every 6 months and am the first owner .

long story short ... no user serviceable parts A overhaul the unit at a transmission shop or just get a second hand unit .

Could covert it to a manual transmission.
Other than that a used one would be the much cheaper route especially, if you DIY.

Another thought would be to call the shop and ask them if they did a drain and fill or a flush using a machine. If they did a flush with a machine then ask them to replace your transmission or sue them.

Thanks so much for your help. Finally got to a transmission shop who confirmed. Torque converter is bad and junk is clogging the filter. So I'm going to be parting this car out! lol Thanks again! -John

If a flush machine was used by the shop you brought it to when the issue initially began it's most likely the source of the clogged internal filter.

You mean to tell me that 17 years and 250+k of wear and tear has nothing to do with it?
