Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
Hi, 1998 civic lx, have a srs light that came on while I took my seatbelt on hwy. just purchased vehicle, only had for 2 weeks. The seatbelt light doesnt come on when seatbelt off, I'd have to play with buckle in order to come on. Probably obvious this may be the cause of the light but I'd like to make sure, so my question is how do you check srs light without scanner?
Thanks
Thanks

Does that work on 98? Everyone that posts has a 01 and up ! I'm not trying to screw up my engine fuse and what not. I've done research and cannot find anything pertaining to 98 civics. The only thing I see is people resetting the srs light not actually reading the code.

Re: Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
On a 98 car you cannot use the OBD2 connector unless you are using a real scanner.
You have to jumper the SCS connector to get flash codes.

Go buy yourself a cheap Bluetooth OBDII code reader like this one.
Amazon.com: Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Scan Tool Scanner Adapter Check Engine Light Diagnostic Code Reader for Android Windows: Automotive
I have one and it works great. I use torque pro and this application analyse the codes and it gives also ton of live info about your car.
I can't tell if torque pro will analyse the SRS code as well, but for that price, you have nothing to lose.

Unless a device specifically states it will read ABS or SRS or any other system you need to access and it states it will do it on the car you have, don't expect it to.
Bur yeah that's dirt cheap for getting engine codes LOL
Re: Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
OBD2 deals only with powertrain: engine and transmission.

I was at first skeptical as well because the cheap price. But there are so many positive reviews that I said to myself why don't you give this gadget a try and the worst case scenario for me will be wasting 15 bucks. For having played with this gadget, I have to admit that I was agreeability surprised. This gadget can read not only error code but it gives also sensor data like rpm, air intake temperature and coolant temperature, engine load, intake vacuum, throttle position and more. I said OP should give this gadget a try because it seems the SRS signal wires are also connected to the obd2 port.

Re: Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
Thanks a lot ezone. I was able to pull code. Getting 1-1. I believe thats "open or increased resistance driver airbag". How do I fix this? Can I just replace the airbag or there's more to it ? As per carfax, car has been in an accident but it doesn't say airbags deployed. I tried resetting light but it comes back on.

Re: Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
1-1: Open
1-2: high resistance
1-3 short circuit or low resistance
Could be anything in the circuit between the control unit and the drivers airbag....
Unplug airbag then reconnect it a few times, erase codes, see if code returns
Unplug airbag, insert 2 ohm resistor in car side connector terminals, see if code goes away (simulate correct airbag resistance for testing)
Unplug airbag, bridge terminals in the car side connection, see if code changes to indicate short circuit (code 1-3)
If no joy, go to step B
Step B: Go to clockspring (cable reel) connector under column and repeat above tests using the car side connector
Ohm test clockspring circuits
CLUE Does anything else controlled on the steering wheel not work correctly?
Do not ohm test the airbag unit itself, if your meter is not right you could trigger an explosion
No time to explain much more about this right now

Thanks.
The cruise control doesn't seem to work. But the horns do. Those are the only 2 functions on them at steering wheel. I will have to pick u a 2 ohm resistor and check things out. What can be wrong if the cruise control doesn't work ?

Re: Srs light diagnose helllllppppp.
Did you bridge the terminals of the airbag connection (maybe with a paper clip or bare bread tie wire) to see if the control unit recognizes a short and sets the appropriate code?
2 ohm resistor may not be necessary.
I mostly use that if I believe the airbag may truly be at fault. I can deduce the rest of the systems circuit by verifying if it will or won't set the correct codes for open or short circuit from the various connectors.
I'd go to the dashboard harness side of the clockspring connector (underside of the steering column, usually a bright yellow connector shell, wire colors could be gray or green) and bridge the terminals to short the airbag wires, see if the SRS control unit recognizes the short and sets the appropriate code for a short circuit.
If it will, then I'd ohm check the individual circuits of the clockspring, it may be partially broken inside.
