Output Shaft Oil Seals

Replacing my CV axles, and the area around where the shaft fits into the transmission looks "moist", so I'm replacing the oil seals too.

Honda dealer wants $45.44 out the door for what I assume are OEM (Arai?). I can get the same ones through Amazon for $35.21 shipped, but there's the wait. RockAuto has ATP and National brands. I've also seen Timken offered on some sites. These are all less expensive. The O'Reilly and AutoZone store brands I won't touch, unless someone tells me they're actually manufactured by Arai or someone reputable.

Any opinions on what brands are best/as good as OEM/fine to use?

Also, has anyone ever done business with HondaPartsNow.com? Are they cool?

$45.44 for this mini condom?: http://www.carid.com/ic/national/tra...s/710630_8.jpg That's rediculously expensive. I purchased a National (brand) seal from Pep Boys for $5 and it has been fine for 8 months so far.

You really need to find an online catalog and look up what you need ahead of time. Some places may come down if they realize you already know what the prices should be.

I looked up axle seals for a 99 Civic w/Manual trans, MSRP says 13.58 for one, 11.12 for the other. Both say ARAI brand in the catalog

The O'Reilly and AutoZone store brands I won't touch, unless someone tells me they're actually manufactured by Arai or someone reputable.
Go to the store, get the box in your hands, open it up and look.

They hate it when you hand parts back say no thanks and walk out. LOL

OEM Honda, internet dealer wholesale prices? You found one, there are many more to choose from.

Re: Output Shaft Oil Seals

Thanks, guys! It really helps to hear from people who have already gone through it!

I did some research and found that National is a reputable brand of oil seals, and I needed to get them for install tomorrow, so that's who I went with. Manufactured in Mexico, but an American corporation (Federal-Mogul), with offices in Michigan. So, I know where to find them.

For future reference for anyone with a 1997 Honda Civic DX and S40 manual 5-speed transmission, the National brand part numbers for the "Output Shaft Oil Seals" (the official Honda terminology):

Driver side - 710315 ($8.99 @ O'Reilly)
Passenger side - 4901 ($10.99 @ O'Reilly)

They appear to be well-made, and have a small spring around the inner portion of the seal that contacts the shaft, so that's a nice detail.

Now, for the fun part...

+1 on this. Also, if they have more than one brand ask to see them all to compare. I was able to compare National vs. Timken and the national brand was thicker and more durable looking.
