Honda Overheating

Got a 2000 Honda Civic LX. Temp gauge needle will go up past the middle after driving around for a while. I've changed the radiator and water pump. But I haven't changed anything else. I don't know much about cars, so I'm completely stumped. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Honda Overheating

Check your thermostat. If its not closing like it should be. That will cause overheating. Locate the upper radiater hose... You cant miss it.. DONT DO THIS IF THE ENGINE IS COLD. ( WARNING-wear protective gloves like an over mitt ) bring the car up to operating temp. Then sqeeze that upper hose.. When you release the hose you should feel a rush of coolant. Thats one way to know if its working. Next is to locate the thermostat itself and take it out and put it in boiling water to see if it opens at the right temp. But try the first way first and let us know. ALSO CHECK YOUR COOLANT LEVEL AND OVER FLOW TANK. DO THOSE FIRST.

Re: Honda Overheating

It usually occurs after I've been running the car long distance, the air con is running, and I've come to a complete stop. The coolant will shoot into the overflow bottle and the needle on the gauge will go up. It goes back down after I've turned off the air con and am moving again. But the coolant has to be refilled.

Re: Honda Overheating

There are 2 fans in the engine compartment....One for the AC, the other for the radiator. Does the radiator fan run? Is it running while the radiator tank spews antifreeze and overheats?

Overheating leads to head gasket problems and possible engine damage.
