97 civic EX dies in gear

Hey guys. I have a 97 civic ex with 199,XXX miles automatic trans. When I first got the car I noticed the idle was very low to the point the car would just die. My mechanic said to replace the IACV. So I replaced the IACV twice (the first one I got was default) and that fixed the original problem but then I got a new problem. When I turn the car the on car idles around 1200-1500 rpms in park, but as the car warms up, it eventually dies, about 15 minutes. However, as soon as I put the car in drive or reverse, the rpms die immediately, and unless I give it gas, it dies completely after about 10 seconds. I have done research and I cant figure out the problem. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it.

Check the throttle body position sensor. Use a multimeter to check the volts at idle to see if they are within tolerance of the service manual.

After replacing the valve, did you do the idle relearn?

I disconnected the battery and after reconnecting I drove it let it run for 15 minutes then drove it around the block. When I got home it died and has been acting up ever since.

I don't have a multimeter to check but do you think autozone would be able to do that for me? I only have bare minimum for tools, socket set, screw drivers, etc just enough to get by.

I'm not sure, but you can call and ask. I know they have some stuff for rent and other things like a scan tool you can use at the store.
