98 LX-Grinding and Popping in 2nd gear/Wont start

I am new to this and Ive never fixed a car alone in my life so I am not sure what to do but I also dont want to spend a whole lot of money trying to fix the problems.

My civic has been sitting for about 3 months now and when I went to go start it recently it wouldnt turn on. It acts like it wants to but wont completely turn over. Could it just need a new distributor? I replaced the starter about 2 years ago.

Also, when it was running I would shift into 2nd gear it would either pop out or grind. The clutch is about a year old. Could it be the transmission or the cables?

grinding in specific gears is most likely related to the syncronizer internal to the tranny. my first gear grinds and i am having the tranny rebuilt.
