p0171 system too lean

i checked the code and its p0171 or something like that for 'system too lean'. went ahead and just deleted the code and has yet to come back. getting a new fuel filter tomorrow just in case.

the guy at oreillys said to clean the maf, but we dont have maf's so i should clean the map sensor?

also when im up high in the rpms the engine makes a weird noise and i have like no power...like a ticking noise kind of. i think this is detonation? could be wrong though. anything else i should do?

1. check fuel pressure. too low- check the filter, pump, and fuel line. too high- replace the fuel pressure regulator
2. Check to see if the primary O2 sensor is working properly
3. With the ignition OFF, apply vacuum to the intake manifold side of the EVAP canister purge valve. no vacuum- replace the valve. holds vacuum- check valve clearances. If the clearances are good check the injectors.

replaced fuel filter. how do i check o2 sensor? and if it means anything i had an exhaust leak (pretty bad) in the headers when the code popped up. after deleting the code and sealing up the exhaust i have yet to have the light come back. but the noise at 5500 rpm is still there. ive noticed its when vtec is suposed to kick in and it does the noise while in neutral too. also right before the problem started i had to change the ignition coil and cap and rotor and put headers and a test pipe on. could ignition timing be off?

sidenote: ive tried using premium gas with octane boosters to see if it effects the noise (heard to try it when running lean to prevent detonation) and it has no effect on the sound or when it starts.

At operating temp, you can back-probe the sensor for output voltage. It should fluctuate from 0.1V- 0.5V or 0.1V- 0.9V, don't remember which. And yes, the timing could be off but, I don't think so. With it making ticking noises I think you need to have the valves at least checked if not adjusted.
