Temp gauge not working

I've got a 2001 with a coolant problem, first it was over-heating......only once in a while the temp gauge would go up......then back down to mid-way.....normal.It has a small exterior leak, more of a seep-age, somewhere that I can't figure out just where, contemplating that it could be head gasket. This had been going on several months, needs about 1/2 quart of coolant once a month, not much.Decided to replace thermostat, local parts store one, NOT oem. Over heating had quit. Now however the temp gauge inside the car has quit working, replaced the temp sensor in the block today and temp gauge in the dash still doesn't work.Car has heat, not really hot heat though, both radiator hoses are hot, what is the next step for me?Could the gauge in the dashboard be bad,or something else.Don't want daughter to drive this car without knowing the temp.

Re: Temp gauge not working

Ok,believe I solved the problem.Bad/loose connection in the wiring at the temp gauge itself,i think.I removed the sensor from the block, turned the key on and took a lighter to the end of the sensor,Bingo..... it pegged the gauge inside the car right away, so...... the gauge inside the car is good, the sensor is good, must be a problem in the wiring, fooled with the connector a few minutes,re-installed the sensor, now seems to be working fine.
