I have a 1996 Honda Civic Ex 1.6 SOHC VTEC and the other night I was driving and it was like the rev liminator kicked in at 4500 RPMs and I switched gears and it did it again so I turned off the car and coast started it and about five mins later it started loseing exceleration and when it came to a dead stop the engine died. Got it towed home it starts but sounds like its struggleing to stay alive, not a pretty sound at all. It is showing two codes being P0108 a bad map sensor and P1259 which is a VTEC malfunction. Any ideas where to start and what it could be to cause the engine to act like this? Any help is greatly appriciated.

well start with the basics first off, when was the last tune up? Meaning fuel filter, air filter, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor changed out? Also make sure that all the battery terminals are clean and tight, the 2 screws that hold the power terminals in the engine fuse panel are tight (Philips heads) and the engine grounds are clean and tight.

take the vtec solenoid apart and clean the filter screen. make sure oil level is full.

Last tune up was about 500 miles ago. I will look into the grounds though thank you

Did you rest your CEL after you cleaned the screen on your Vtec?

happened to me once before, cleaned the screen and the solenoid and topped up the oil but it only helped for a month before engine light came on. i replaced the solenoid and its been fine for 2 yrs now. only other thing i can think of is what weight oil are you using. some people have problems with oil being too thin. i would recommend 5w30 for all civic motors.
