Please help - Transmission slipping in 2nd gear??

Hi,

I have a 1999 Civic EX Couple with 154k on it. It has been a great commuter car. I am in the market to possible replace the car and took it to Carmax to get it appraised as a potential trade-in. The appraiser said that everything in the car checks out except for transmission "slippage" - especially in 2nd gear. I have no idea what this means. I have noticed that the car drives smooth some days and a little rough on others.

I have a 120 mile per day commute. Do I need to get this fixed ASAP? Any ballpark estimate of the cost involved?

Please help.

Regards
Nick

About $2500 for a rebuild on the tranny.

Thanks for the response. Do you think its worth it to fix this on a 11 yr old car? How long do you think I can push it? What will happen if I don't get this fixed?

If your already feeling it starting to go then it won't last long. Taking it easy it could last for several more years but, chances are it'll go within the next year or so. If your looking to get a new car it isn't worth fixing, just trade it in. Maybe you could talk the Honda dealer into a customer loyalty discount to get better value for your trade-in.

Do trans drain and fills and that should improve shift quality, if its slipping while warmed up she doesn`t have much life left in her.

Thank you all for your feedback. Yes indeed - I am in the market to get a new/used car. So as you said it may not be worth replacing the tranny at this point. I will get the transmission fluid changed and see what happens.

As I had mentioned earlier, I have a 120 mile commute every day (majority of them on the highway). The car should hold up for a few months - correct?

Who knows?? It's a slipping transmission. Borrowed time.

Have you done regular maintenance to the transmission? i.e. drain and fill the transmission every 30k miles? That's crucial to life expectancy on every auto trans on the planet.

If you haven't serviced the transmission, do it now. It's cheap. Buy 3 quarts of transmission fluid and pull the drain plug out. Refill and check fluid level. You need a jack, a drain pan, a funnel, a 3/8" ratchet, a couple rags and about 2.5 quarts of fluid. It takes about 10 minutes to do it.
