Buyers Guide... help needed

Here is my situation, I am looking for a 6th gen civic most likely a hatch. But most of the hatches for sale in my area are from private sellers. So heres the problem I don't know much about mechanics so what should I look for when buying from a private seller? I don't want to get scammed or be stuck with a car with major issues.

Thanks in advance,
basicbone

There is soooooo much to look for. make sure you know what was done to the car. if the guy did mods himself make him show you EXACTLY what he did and how he went about doing them. Make sure the ignition switch is properly functioning on that car. there were well over 1 million civics recalled that year with this issue and can be very dangerous. also carfax is your friend check that out and make sure everything is good.

Its hard to find a car like that which wasn't abused or riced out beyond borders. Have a mechanic look at it. The $100 bucks you pay him will be well worth it. My buddy had his hatch inspected after he gave up his neon for it. Mechanic then told him it needed about $3000 in repair to the suspension alone

Check:
- Body & subframe for rust and corrosion
- Suspension (Very expensive fix)
- Timing belt
- Maintenance rocords
- Headgasket (easy to check - when the car is warm and idling, does the heat work? look at the temperature guage aswell and make sure it doesn't overheat)
