HELP!! Tail light and dash illumination went out after install.

Hi Guys,

I installed a new Panasonic deck today along with two front speakers, this is my first install but I thought I was pretty well prepared, until after the install, me and my gf went out for dinner and saw the rear tail light and the A/C control illuminations went out. Everything elese works fine, even the A/C controls are working, but just not the illumination lights and the tail light, also the turn lights used to blink when lock/unlock the doors through the alarm remote, now that's not working too!

This is how the wires are connected from the new deck to the adapter harness: Front/rear speakers wires to the F/R speaker wires of adapter, ground to ground, red to red, yellow to yellow.
The dimmer/illumination/remote wires I did NOT connect due to when I researched on the forum, someone mentioned not to use dimmer and illumination, and I decided to install the amp on another day so I didn't think I need to connect the remote wire (blue).

So the only things connected was the front/rear speakers and the new radio.

Someone please help, it's going to start raining here and I don't want my gf to drive without tail lights at night, dangerous!

Thanks

I.F.

The fuse on the head unit? Where is all the other fuses related to the car's electrical system?
How did I blown them? I disconnected the negative battery terminal before uninstalling.

Hmm....strange, other than from my new headunit to the adapter harness no other wiring was done, how did I end up blowing a fuse?
He was doing his parking lights when it touched, as far as I remembered, there was nothing that sparked because there was no cutting of the wires done inside the car.

So I guess I should check that fuse like he did? help......gf is about to rip my ***** out....

sounds like you blew a fuse, it's going to be fuse number two under the hood labeled small light fuse. Make sure you cap that orange wire on the wiring harness because if it grounds you'll run the risk of a short and continually blowing fuse #2 everytime you turn on the parking lights.

Yea its a fuse under the hood, Its a 15a Fuse, can't remember the name.. but mine kept blowing everytime i put a new one in. But i had an exposed wire behind my head unit and that's is why it kept blowing, So check the Fuses under the hood (15a) and replace the blown one and if it blows again than you have an exposed wire somewhere.

This same situation happened to me when i installed my kenwood deck. For the lights, check the fuses and for the illumination lights; well your gonna have to get a new cluster cuz it controls the illumination lights. I figured that out when i took my car to honda to get it checked. it cost me $100 for them to tell me that my cluster lights which also controls the illumination was busted. The speedometer and all the other meters still work, but you wont have any illumination at night.

Sorry, but what is a cluster?

I know I've capped the two used orange wires together on the adapter harness, one for the dimmer and the other for illumination. Could it be that crimpping is not as safe as soldering the wires? I'd put electrical tapes over each one of the caps just to make sure it won't spark, but still......

So any fuse that's shaped like the one under the hood rated at 15amp will do? Or, do I have to go to Honda dealer to buy them?

Do you even know how to check to see if a fuse is blown? But you can go almost anywhere and buy fuses.... Wal-Mart/Autozone/Discount Auto Parts/Pep-Boys, There the Mini Fuses and the 15As are Blue, You have Spares located in the Fuse Box under the hood. Use a spare and see if it blows when you turn your lights on, And a Cluster is the Big thing in front of your face where all of yuor gauges are.

I dont even think you are supposed to connect the Orange wires, i think they are the Illumination ones, but i dont think you connect them. You only need to conenct the Speaker ones, Remote (Blue), Ground (Black), Battery (Red), and Power (yellow). I cant remeber all of them but im pretty sure about the Orange ones.

And no you don't need a new cluster, he just needs to check his fuses if he can find them. And if it blows again than he has a short somewhere, that either has to do with a wire touching metal or those orange wires that arn't supposed to be connected.

I didn't connect them to the factory harness, I just twisted the dimmer/illumination together from the adapter harness and put a cap and electrical tape over them, could that cause a short?

Ok, I went out to the car and saw the fuse box: Question: Am I suppose to disconnect the negative battery terminal before pulling out each of the four 15 amp fuses to check to see if they're blown? You'd mentioned spares, but which one, the one sticking up? Sorry I'm such a noob.

Thanks

Alright, Open your fuse box and located underneath the Fuse Box lid you will see each fuse and what they are and where they are located, Locate the 15a Fuse labeled Small Lights, and pull it out (there should be a Fuse Puller inside the Fuse Box, if not get needle nose and pull it out) Check to see if its blown, If its blown youll see the metal wire inside of it broken in half or you wont see a metal wire at all. Than locate the spares (look under your Fuse Box Cover) and find a 15a and replace it, Than turn your lights on and check to see if it blew again, If it did than i would pull your HU out and Check and make sure all wires arnt touch metal and make sure all exposed wires are coverd, Also disconnect the 2 orange wires, let all wires that you did not connect to the factory harness be by themselves. Dont connect them to anything just cover them up. And no you dont need to discconect the negative.

Red arrow = Location of the 15A small fuse on diagram on the lid
Blue arrow = Location of the actual fuse
Green Arrow = Location of a 15A spare fuse (At least on my car)

I do have one suspected wire in mind, the blue remote wire, I lefted it with the clear cover over the tip, thinking that's just as good as a cap. May be that's the culprit? I'm gonna have to pull the dash and see.

That is probably your problem... Where you twisted the Dimmer and illumination together, Let all unused wires be seperate and dont connect them to anything. Just cover them up with Elect. Tape or wire nuts.

ok, went out to the car and replaced the small lighting fuse with the spare one, sure enough it blew again. So now I'm gonna try to separate the orange wires and cap them individually.

Thanks for that picture, really knocked some sense into me as to where to look.

I did change the fuse. the exterior lights were working. the cluster controls the illumination and if the cluster don't work, the illumination wont either.
And i brought it to honda and they said dat the cluster was messed up.
Leave the orange wires alone.

Just check all wires at your HU and make sure all the unused wires are Capped/Taped individually. Also if im not mistaken your CD player should be still working perfectly fine right?

Yes they are working, AND PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!!!!!!!!
and yes, no cluster is required, thank god! but thanks for trying to help anyway.

To everyone that's helped, THANKS!!!!!! rep to everyone of you!

7thgencivic ROCKS!

P.S. it is the orange wires that's the culprit, I separated the two with individual caps and electric taped them up the a** to prevent short, and did the same thing with the remote wire too, eventho it didn't seem to be the problem, but just to play it safe.

That was my last resort guy and thats what i did cuz i tested my cluster and everything. Changed my cluster and everything is fine, that was my prob. + plus right after i installed my headunit and put it on, some smoke came out of the cluster.
