wal mart car audio!
yeah, so i live in the woods and wanted an amp wiring kit to put all of my "stuff" in my new civic. i decided to try and find a good kit off the internet, but first decided to humour myself by taking a gander at wal-marts car audio stuff. i was pleasantly suprised by their 4 ga dual amp kit (EFX) i checked it out and it came with like 14or 17 ft of 4 ga, a 4-to-dual8ga distro block, some 8 ga power and ground wire, connectors, remote wire, fuse, and 2 20ft? 2 ch rcas (which werent the best qual, but no noise) but anyhow i though this was a good deal at 25 dollars, because you can save yrself the shipping and waiting of mail order, also i got the EFX battery terminal for 8 dollars whicdh was pretty nice looking. so yeah, if your in a pinch and want pretty much everything all in one kit (i use for subs and fronts, who cares about rears) check it out. and hell, its actually pretty decent looking wire, maybe not 1 million tinned strands or whatever but then again... its wire and OFC and pretty flexable. yeah so theres just a heads up to check the WAL MART audio scene, i also saw some wiring harnesses for the new civics. just stay away from those speakers, amps, neon bullshit, and well, everything else in the stereo area.
and i was also pleasantly suprised about how easy it was to run wire to the trunk in the civic no drilling, mods, or wires bulging everywhere ... rock on aces!

Wire is wire .....if it was burning he was pulling too much current for that gauge wire.
That doesn't mean walmart has cheap crap, it means he did a bad install and cheaped out on the wires. Obviously what he got wasn't up to the demands of the system.
If my Civic burned out the tranny pulling a trailer it doesn't mean its a POS ..... it just wasn't up to the demands I was placing on it. Obviously I want a car w/ a tow rating, equiped tow package, and a V6 or a V8.

I have that wal-mart wiring kit and I must say I was pleasently surprised as well. I've had it installed for a couple months. I asked a guy at a local shop who I trust, he's the owner, and even he said wire is wire. He said if you laid it out next to rockford fosgate power wire or something it may not have as many strands but it will still get the job done just fine. Basically that wire kit, the 4 guage is a little closer to 5 guage and the 8 guage is close to 9 guage. Its just not as many strands as better quality would have. But wire is wire, copper is copper, it will carry the voltage and current as good as anything else. Just need to use the right stuff for your equipment. At $25 for a dual amp kit, I thought it was a steal.
Oh, forgot to add .....
If his wires were actually burning, the caseing would melt off the wire. Then he would have a short. When you have a short in a 4 gauge power wire there will be problems. First the fuse would instantly blow. If it didn't you would have sparks, and lots of em ..... not to mention that your car would most likely be on fire.
I find it hard to believe he had so much current draw he was melting the case off a 4 gauge power wire. I have never heard of such a thing. That would mean he was drawing way over 150 amps continuously.
Something sounds fishy ......

joe, its very easy to melt the casing off wires. all a short circuit is, is a massive overcurrent. and 150 amps, very easy to draw. ive probbly drawn 150 amps in my car at one point or another. as to the walmart wire thing, all you have to worry about with wire is strand count. an 8 gauge wire with a 500ish strand count or whatever will draw more current than a double 0 gauge with only a strand count of like 10, those wires you see for powerlines. electricity can only travel on the outside of a wire, which is why all those distro blocks are only gold plated and it does the job plenty.
I guess my point was if you have a system that draws over 150 AMPS continuous that its probably really bad ***.
If the drain is that much I would imagine you wouldn't try powering it w/ a single 4 gauge wire out of a kit from Walmart. But then again the kit seems to be packed w/ good stuff.
The altenator must be hurting too ..... haha.
From their website:
Power-EFX 4 Gauge
High-amperage, ultra-flexible, 4 gauge OFHC (oxygen-free high-conductivity copper) power cable. 1666 - 36 ga. total strands. 125-degree C high temperature / chemical resistant, non-gripping jacket - with measurement increments.
On a side note .... Scosche is a rather reputable brand isn't it ... ????
