Ive got some questions about FatMat. From what ive read here FatMat is a good sound deadener. How much should I get to do my trunk, doors, rear deck, and the rear side panels. I want to do some layers to each area to try and kill all the rattle that I can since Ima be pumpin 3 L7's with over 3,000 total system watts. Ive also heard that FatMat leaves a smell for a while, is that true ? If there is, is there any way to avoid the smell because I dont like my car stinking.
You should get 200 sq. feet. I used 100 of it just in the cabin of the car....2 layers on the floor, 3 in the doors, and 3 in the side panels and tire wells in the back. 1 layer in patches on the rear deck. I will probably use all of the 100 sq. ft I have left in the trunk at some point, and I would also like to do some on the roof, but thats a little more difficult.
As far as the smell, I did mine about a month and a half ago, and it still has residual traces of tar smell, it will go away soon I think, almost gone now. The only way to avoid the smell is to use Dynamat instead, which I have found has NO smell, but its like 5x as much money, so def. not worth it for a couple months of smell....besides, after 10 min in the car, you get used to it.

I fatmatted my car about 2 1/2 months ago but everytime someone new gets in it they ask what smells like tar. I dont smell anything anymore but i think i'm immune to the smell. But for the first month it definatly smelled.
I used a 100 sq ft roll but I didn't get real crazy with it and my car doesnt rattle anymore.
If your really not up for the smell then ike sound has dynamat xtreme for $128 for a 36 sq ft roll. You wont need as much dynamat as you do fatmat because it deadens better, but you'll still be at about 2.5X the price.
I've also found that fatmat doesn't like sticking to its self that well. My trunk isn't finished yet so when you open it all you see is the fatmat and everytime I open it, another piece has fallen off the trunk lid (trunk has 2 layers)

I did 2 layers on the back doors and 1 layer on the entire trunk floor and sides with 50sq.
Didn't any of you get a "FatMAt Scrub" with your order? It smells horrible but does a real good job of cleaning and degreasing.

As far as sound deadening, Fatmat is still your best bang for the buck. BrownBread is slightly more expensive at $99 for about 70 Sq. Ft, and smells worse, and while Dynamat has no smell, it is about $150 retail for 36. Sq Ft, versus $99 for 100 Sq. Ft. of Fatmat.

Thanks for all the input I guess Ima just get 200 square feet to make sure I got enough. As for road noise ehh its not to bad (at least I dont think it is) I just wanna try to make the car rattle the least possible. I just hate the fact its goin to smell up my car.
Actually no i didn't clean the first layer that i applied. I just assumed that it being brand new on the roll that it would have been clean and ready to apply another layer to. It was cold out tho. I still have some left over that I can use now that its warmer outside and I still havent done the floor yet.
I hate doing the floor.
Mystic, have you ever tried Dynaliner for the floor? I was looking at it cause it's cheaper than the Tacmat. Guessing it is similar just slightly inferior. I think the Tacmat is thicker and contains closed-cell foam. Know anyone who's used the Tacmat on the floor to kill road noise?
The audio shop I go to uses TacMat because it is 1/4 inch thick, and Dynaliner is 1/2 inch thick. Dynaliner also requires the use of spray adhesive to stick.
TacMat sticks by itself, is thinner, and works better.

Fatmat is currently shipping very slowly direct from the vendor. I have not been impressed with their customer service, or their notification process. I have yet to get their product, so I cannot comment on it yet.
I have used Dynamat in the past. Great product, as it should be for the price. I've also used the McMaster-Carr asphalt mastic sheeting (basically the same as original Dynamat) with great success and it is dirt cheap.

I just got the rest of my order of fatmat in today. It took 7- 10 days to get both shipments. I ordered the floor liner kit, plus the 36 sq ft sound deadener for doors and trunk. I can't wait to start installing this stuff.
Question for all of you that have that sound deadened the doors... what did you do about the big hole where that fat piece of foam goes?
Did you end up cutting a hole so that the foam would go into that space or did you just end up chopping up the foam on the door?
I started working on the door this weekend... man, that's quite a bit of work there, mainly because of all the curves in the door, I hope I don't have to do this again for a very, very long time.
here's a picture of what the left door looked like on Saturday night:

Ok fellas....I just spent ALL DAYM day sound proofing the car. I removed all of the seats and carpet and laid down the fatmat floor liner.
My verdict on the floor liner: (remember, this is just MY opinion)
its ok, I guess...ok I'm lying...it really didn't help much. I tested the civic going down the same stretch of road, coasting in nuetral, and I really couldn't tell any difference with or without the floor liner kit. There was no odor, and the stuff was easy to work with. I may have been a little harsh in judging
However....
I did install the 36 sq ft fatmat kit to the trunk (doors treatment coming soon - Wed.). This stuff is amazing, with the exception of the tar smell. I applied one layer all around the trunk, and doubled the layers on the rear deck and trunk lid. I did notice a small gain in spl, and I did notice that most of the agrivating rattles are gone. Plus the bass just seems more....Solid (I guess that would be the best word to describe it).
My verdict on the fatmat sound deadener:
This stuff is awesome!! No quality sound system should be without it! Hopefully when I apply this stuff to the doors, some of the road noise will decrease. Hope this helps.

Slikor: yes, the McMaster Carr mastic was moderately stinky, for about a week and then it was gone, or I got used to it.
For what it is worth, I just installed 2/3 of my trunk yeterday with the Fat Mat. I would highly reccommend this over the McMaster Carr mastic anyday. It is much thinner, and the aluminum foil like cover helps with strechy installations. I put it out in the sun for about 4 hours before install. I think this helped substantially with removing some of the smell before install, because I have not noticed the small in the car yet. It is much easier to mold than other products I have worked with, provided it has been well heated (i.e. sun light).

how much would i need to do about 2-3 layers on the trunk and about 2 layers for the rear deck? i dont really think i need to do the doors, they dont really rattle and its not like bass is pounding out of the little 6 1/2 speakers. also my rear sail panel (i guess thats what its called, the plastic piece that goes between the rear window and rear side window) rattles and shakes, could you fit some pieces in those?
