OK I am new to this forum and I should have joined the day I bought my car because this site helps alot. I have a 02 EX coupe and it is time to do my system. I am going to instal a pair of 6 1/2 components in the front and a single 12" sub in a sealed enclosure in the trunk. The factory 6x9s in the back deck are going to be thrown out, and I am just going to keep the rear deck empty so that I get more bass through the 6x9 openings, and so that I have a good soundstage from my fronts. I will have to sound deaden my trunk though because my nitto tires are very noisy. Now for my question! I am looking to spend up to $200 on the components and up to $200 dollars on the sub (going by E-bay and Ikesound prices) I am looking for clean sound and clarity, My music ranges from Sting to Eminem, but I would rather that Sting sounds good! (sorry Marshal) so I was thinking about either Infinity kappa fronts and a Perfect sub, or Audiobahn 6002 components and one of audiobahns subs. What are your guys opinions on these or should I go with other brands of speakers?

what about amps? Perfect 12 is a nice sub. From Ikesound, either Kappas or Quart PSDs. I have PSDs and they are not harsh like every seems to believe, but they do lack mid-bass.

thezeb.com had some great deals on audiobahn amps...from what I have heard they are good amps but draw a TON of power from the E-system.
Try woofersetc.com
and onlinecarstereo.com
more selection then ikesound with comparable prices.

I would stay away from Audiobahn unless you are buying your equipment for looks and not performance. Audiobahn equipment does not live up to its specs. By the way, I speak from experience...
The Infinty Kappa components sound great! As for subs, I am not too fond of Infintiy. For $200, you can get a 15" Alpine type-r shipped from www.ikesound.com

I have no personal experience with them, but I've heard quite a bit about the Adire Audio subs, the Shiva for 12" apps it's only $125 and you can save the rest for your amp
If I don't recommend it, i'm sure some one else would. http://www.adireaudio.com/mobile_aud...vers/shiva.htm

tight bass is a function of install, not woofer size.
but 95% of the time people say they want "tight" bass, its because they try to make speakers do what they are no t supposed to do.
"tight" bass to these people is generated entirely by midbass and upper-bass, not sub-bass. so when people buy their 15's and install them, they turn the crossover up to 90 Hz then talk **** about how sloppy the woofer is. of course its gonna sound sloppy if it was only designed to play 40 Hz and below!
taking care of the potential issues with "slop" and "tight" we get to reccommendations fo ryour system. unfortunately, with yrou budget, you cant have all you desire. with clarity as yrou main goal, those kappas would be an excelent choice. but in yrou price range, clarity also means ZERO midbass.
then you combine that with a speaker like a shiva, wich has almost no upperbass and definitely no midbass, on budget amplifiers, you can see where yoru system is going quick!
shiva and kappas are amazingly clear speakers, untill you try to play them outside the range they were designed to play in, which would leave a HUGE frequency gap in yoru system!
unfortunately something will have to give for the other, what im guessing you mean by "tight" and clarity.
With that In mind, I would reccommend the fanatic Q series, or fanatic P series components by rockford fosgate. the midrange is not intolerably muddy, and even then is really only bad at ludicrous volume (amplifier dependant, of course) those sets have some really decent powerful midbass to them, which means you should get all teh "tight" sounding bass you are looking for. (unless you want yrou bass to knock you out of the seat when it hits, i assume you want sweet sound when you talk abotu clarity)
this set would be better able to match up to a shiva, which would give you your smooth clear sub-bass response you are lookign for (again, properly installed of course.)
this setup wouldnt be enough to make you a blockrocker, but it would certainly give you clarity and crispness playing both sting and eminem.
NOW:
if you wanted to go another route, you could too. you would sacrifice such a good sound with eminem (due to getting a subwoofer that cannot play those o-so-low frequencies eminem loves to bump) but you would gain all that clarity you wanted. with teh kappas, youd have the supreme midrange clarity you desired so much, with zero midbass. then, you could get a mid level 10" subwoofer, like the jl 10w3v2 or other clear high playing powerful subwoofer, that could better compliment the kappas.
this setup would be crisp clear, and certainly hurt your ears more than the first setup (ive found 95% of people who mean "tight" mean ear piercing bass) but you would lose your ultra low frequency extension, not to say you wont have any! just that the shiva does it BETTER
so there you go, 2 reccommended systems, bottom line:
rockford + shiva = better range, more sound coming from up front, warm sound, closer to what audiophiles desire in a soundstage
kappa + 10w3v2 = more midrange clarity, upper bass that will hit you in the head and give yrou friends a headache, more vibrations than actual soundwaves, takes up less space in the trunk, less impressive to audiophiels fomr a range and stage concern, might be more impressive from a crispness point of view.

now we are getting to the good stuff! I wasn't aware of the kappas weak midbass. I would like to go the first route using speakers with good midbass and a 12" sub. But what are some other drivers that would work good together without leaving a hole in the sound? If I were to spend a little more what about Alpine type Rs, Infinity perfects, Polk/Momo, or other components in that range? Also for Subs I'm not very knowlagable on which brands of subs would work well for me, other than the Shivas. I plan on using the Alpine 7995 for a head unit. I don't know why there are so few head units that are preamp only. How many of us actually use the 23 watts per channel in our systems? Also with a 1/2" to 1" spacer in the front doors how deep of a driver will fit? Some of these speakers are 2 1/2" deep. I need to know that they will fit before I order them! Thanks for all the info! this is helping me out quite a bit
