i personally dont like the flush look in the trunk, but thats just my opinion
Mounted flat like that you will hear more cone noise, and more distortion. Facing the tailgate will produce higher SPL due to the shape of the sound waves, and the pattern they move in. I would really recomend doing it with the box facing the tailgate.
mystic, could you clear something up for me? could you explain in detail what cone "noise" is, and why i cant hear a difference in my car between rear firing and up firing, rear AND upfiring, and even forward firing when i stuf around the box? (hear as in quality difference, not in volume difference)
also could you tell me why i didnt gain or lose any SPL between upfiring and back firing and firing up AND back at teh same time? all this with the same box same woofer same amplifier and same settings, of course..........

Are you listening to a digital rap baseline, or actual music? If you listen to the sub with it facing up, or facing into the passenger compartment, you can get a noise thats hard to describe....almost like it's rattling I guess. You might not be hearing it over the rattle of your car or you might just not be into music enough to pick it out. It's easier to hear with rap, because the bass is digitized, and therefor, it's playing just a bass note, not like a bass drum. Also, if your subs arent that great or you arent turning it up all the way, then maybe thats why you arent hearing anything. If it sounds OK to you, then go for it....I was just sharing my experience with my car

What your referring to is cone flex... most quality subs these days don't suffer from it.....
Are your Alums SVC 4ohm or DVC4ohm?
The DVC subs require larger enclosures for optimal use.. .88 would work well for the SVC alums 1.1 would work well for the DVC alums

Rear firing in a sealed box WILL, WON'T, or CAN cause cone flex for the 12" Aluminum Eclipse.
I'm a little confused with this "cone flex" thing.
