complicated question - front speakers

Here goes!
I have a pair of Infinity coaxial speakers in my 01 coupe, running of 58 RMS. And it sounds pretty decend!

Now , I got a pair of alpine spr-176a components for christmas, I took the door off last night and looked at things, there is no way these type R's are fitting in the door without cutting metal! Which I don't want to do.

The thing is that with the coaxials the sound stage is low and it sounds like the sound is playing from my feet, I really want to lift the imaging higher , which would be the case with components, right.
Heres what I did and would like to know from you guys if this is bad for the speakers or imaging, or just your 2 cents!

I kept the infinities in the door , but wired the tweeters from the type R's in with the crossover from the type R's. Will the crossover eliminate the highs from the infinities and thus only act as a midbass woofer or the infinities still play highs through its tweeeters?
Is this bad for the infinities ,because I dont want to hurt them. The sound is a lot better with the highs coming fron the type r tweeters and sound stage is higher.

WHAT DO YOU THINK , KEEP IT LIKE THIS OR CHANGE BACK. WHAT IS BEST FOR SQ?

Have you tried using a spacer for the speakers? If you use 1/2 to a 1 inch spacer it may fit in there.

all your really doing is missing out on the sound you can be getting!!! Type-R's sound great dont be affraid to cut! no one will ever see that you cut your doors. You wont hurt the infinity's but the crossover's are designed for the Type-R's and the sound is gonna be alot less!
