Colbalt amps...?

I am thinking of powering my infinity 6.25i's and 605cs components with the cobalt CS200.4. What do you think about Orion amps, specifically this one that I am interested in? Will it do a great job powering these speakers. If not, maybe some suggesstions as to what you guys think.

One more thing, I have heard the you can connect all four speakers to only two channels of an amp so they are high passed, leaving two channels empty for low pass. What are the drawbacks/risks of doing this? Will there be a loss of power output?

Last I knew Orion was a reputable brand.

Can you power 4 speakers off just 2 channels of a 4 channel amp ????

Yes if its rated for 2 ohms. The drawback is you loose all fader control between front and rear. There is no way to give the fronts a little more power than the rears. Generally to make it sound right the fronts need far more power than the rears.

In my car I have my components on a Kicker 150.2 amp up front and 4-way 6x9's off deck power in the rear. Even with that major power difference I still have the fader set to +7 towards the front to balance it out and sound right.

Heres some examples with a 4 channel amp with these ratings.
60x4 @ 4 ohms or
90x4 @ 2 ohms or
180x2 @ 4 ohms (bridged)

Fronts and a single 4 ohm sub.
Fronts get 60x2
Sub gets 180x1

Fronts plus rears on one channel plus a single sub (fronts & rears in parallel act as 2 ohms) (share power)
Fronts get 45x2
Rears get 45x2
Sub gets 180x1

Fronts and Rears only, no sub.
Fronts get 60x2
Rears get 60x2

Fronts and two 4 ohm subs.
Fronts get 60x2
Subs get 60x2

Fronts and two DVC 4 ohm subs (wired in parallel makes them act as 2 ohm)
Fronts get 60x2
Subs get 90x2

Thanks.

Right now I just want to power the in car speakers. If and when I add a sub I am going to get a seperate amp for it. That being said, should I stick with a two channel amp for the fronts , or go 4 channel for all the speakers. You see I want to high pass and not have low frq going to either of the infinity's because they cant handle it. On the other hand, losing all the lows may make my ears bleed listening to the highs and mids all the time.

You have not had too much problem with your setup have you?

Btw dude, I love ur setup, did you make the board that the amps are mounted on yourself? How did you go about doing it. I love the desgin for that and the sub.

I would just keep the rears off deck power and get a 2 channel amp for the fronts.

Remember on an amp they will sound much better, go louder, and give more bass too.

Once the fronts are on an amp ..... this is how to set it up.

- set all controls flat (bass = 0, treble = 0, no loud, no eq, etc ...)
- fade completely to the rear so just the rears play
- turn it up till you hear distortion
- back it off just a bit
- this is now the majic number of the deck ... this is your max volume that will sound good
- now fade totally to the front so just the fronts play
- turn the gain down all the way on the amp
- turn the deck up to the majic number
- turn up the gain on the amp until you hear distortion and back the gain off slightly
- put the fader back to center
- now all speakers max out at the same volume
- now adjust the fader as necessary

The amp board is a pine laminated board 16" x 48" cut down to 16" x 38" or so.

Cut the board to size and lay everything out on it.
Drill holes for all the wires.
Cover in carpet. Spray adhesive all over board, staple the bottom and side edges.
Feel around for the drilled holes. Cut an X with a razor over all the holes for the wires to get through.
Screw on the amp(s).
Poke all the wires through and connect them to the amp.
Connect the board to the rear deck up top in any way you see fit.

I used hook-n-eye's so the I can remove the board quickly if I get a flat tire or something. I then taped them so they don't rattle or come unhooked when I hit big bumps.

That whole thing took me like 2 full days. Very time consuming but it rocks later.
