I would go for a class D amp because they are cheaper, draw less power, but the sound quality is not as good as a stereo class AB amp. I think that only a true audiphile would notice the difference anyway. Some amp brands to look for that are cheap in price but have decent quality and good power output in class D amps are MTX, JBL, Kenwood, JL, and Alpine amps.
I like these amps for around $300:

MTX amp

JL Amp

Alpine amp

Also, Ikesound.co has good prices on Kicker, JBL, and Fosgate Mono amps.

I have actually heard Mono amps made by all of these companies except for Kenwood, but I have had two Kenwood amps in the past and I suspect that their class D amps are good too. All of these brands are types that you can test at local chain stores like Fry's, Best Buy, curcuit city, and good guys. There are definantly better brand though, but these companies are all reputable and have all been in the car audio business for a long time. I really can't tell the difference between how an amp sounds, and I think that most people can't as well with sub amps. Power is power, you just have to pay for the "extras"

For subs, assuming that you want to spend between $300-$400, these are some that I have heard and liked:

JLs 12W0s and 12W3 (newer 12W3, but I have not heard one yet)
Infinty perfects (that is what I have)
One kicker solo Baric L5 or L7 depending on your amp.
Alpines

I have heard others but my brain is starting to freeze...I need to go to sleep!!!
