Sub Problem

Ever since my sub was installed, I thought that the rattling I was hearing was coming from the rear deck... til today... I opened up my trunk with the volume turned up, and on the lowest frequencies, the front of rockford fosgate 12in (the part covering the cone with the rockford fosgate logo?) was vibrating very loudly whenever it hit... sounded like it was vibrating plastic... It did this at high and low volumes (just not as loudly) with the sub turned up or down.

specs
rockford fosgate Punch HE 12
Pioneer Premier DEHP630 HU
Pair Pioneer Premier 5.25's
Pair Pioneer Premier 6.5's
Rockford Fosgate Punch 200S (car speakers)
Eclipse 3322 amp (400W) (sub)

Is the sub busted? It doesn't sound distorted at all...
thanks

I noticed that I had this too!!! I thought it was my rear deck, but when i opened my trunk it sounds like the rattling is coming to from my subs. I also noticed that I have some air leaks around the subs that I need to seal. Could the air leaks be causing the problem?

Maybe, but I get the noise at low volume too.

In regards to my air leaks, what negative affects do air leaks have?

Hobbes, Is your box a Q-logic box by any chance? If it is, it may be that damn Q-ring vibrating?

Fonto-
My box is an Audio Craft (no grill)... mine does it at low volumes too, you just can't hear it from inside the car. The bass still is still tight... it's just annoying. On Rockford Fosgate subs, on the cone there's a round piece withthe rockford fosgate logo...it sounds like it's coming from there... could it be air shooting out from beneath it?? WhiteRabbit- what is lead slap?

thanks for the responses.

lead slap = wire to teh vc "slapping" the cone.

also, try pulling the woofer out and shaking it. does it make a sound? it shouldnt.......

Either both of you bought subs from a defective Batch which RF didn;t recall...or RF's quality has gone down even more..

It logically could be 1 of 4 things.. Your lead wires are making contact with the woofer cone (probable) The dust cap was not properly glued to the cone (not likely) Try with the sub off to tap the dust cap see if you get any noise. You stripped a hole when you screwed it in and the screw is vibrating against the frame of the basket (actually seen this..but doubful) 4.....the least likely of all but your amps making a switching noise at a frequency which sounds like a rattle. Every time the cone changes direction it can make a small "snap or electrical buzz" sound..the louder you turn the volume..he louder the noise gets...

Check the Screws remove the woofer..see if the Tinsel leads are really close to the cone. Check the dustcap/ RF logo ..it all those fail..try a different sub on the amp and see if the rattle sounds mimicked...

Cheers

checked for the lead wires too close to the cone and all the screws... they all looked fine...
so I took it to the install shop. the install shop said that the sub was busted ... cone was vibrating against the coils?
which then I ran into a new problem...see my new thread

sub didn't rattle (forgot to say that above)
the amp that was connected to the speakers had something loose in it though...
