How do I check if their is a short in my stereo power wire??

get a test meter and see if it gives you continiuty between the power wire and ground.

What kind of test meter? Would a stander voltmeter work?

most multimeters have someting that can test continuity.

another trick would be to take a 12 v led hook the positive up to teh fuse box and test teh ground of teh led to your radios power wire, that will tell you if it is grounding out.
