well ya can't go wrong with Eclipse, Pioneer, ALpine, clarion or Nakamichi... Some other good HU's are Panasonic, and kenwood..
there's no best brand..it all depends on what your looking for.

pioneer Whatever u do, u HAVE to get rid of those stupid, tinny-sounding OEM speakers. Try replacing them first, as this alone improves the quality and depth of your sound. After that, go with a high-end Alpine or Nakamichi head unit. With some of the alpines (the ones with the Bass Engine Pro), you don't even need a separate subwoofer--unless you're a basshead!

Sony makes reasonably good-looking and sounding comsumer head units...nothing more nothing less. Their ES line is really the only Sony stuff I would ever buy but for their price, they still skimp on sound quality.
Ah~ Ok ^_^ I'm thinkin' of gettin' a new sound system too :\ so this post is helpin' me out as well. I wanna replace the HU (Even though the dealer tells me this will void warranty on EVERYTHING "anit-theft" on the vehicle, including vehicle itself >D hahaha) and the speakers. I'm curious to know more 'bout "Bass Engine Pro", since I would consider myself a bass-head ;p I listen to a lot of Club-style music (Techno, Trance, Ambient, so on) as well as R&B/Hip-Hop styles and Rock. So I'm needin' a system that does well with most ALL music styles. I find myself turnin' the stock HU treble to +3 and bass all the way to, what, +6? I'd like to get a subwoofer, but I don' want music such as rock to sound like it's drowned out by the bass, but I want to be able to go "swangin' and bangin'" through town when listenin' to my Hip-Hop/R&B. Thanx for the replies in advance! ^_~

What about JVC i have one and think its the greatest thing. Great sound and motorized face. I love how it pops out. I also thought JVC was one of the best brands for HU's. Im having the hardest time findin one that matches the black interior and red backlights. Anybody know any that will match it?
About those Sony HUs, I have one. I would not get another or recommend to anyone. At first, it seemed fine, but then later, it started to skip, it would sometimes skip on the smallest cracks, but wouldn't skip in railroads, not it skips on both. Also, under, i have the little cubby hole where i put some CDs. I use to put my phone in there and just from the phone sliding down into the hole, the Hu woudl skip. that was pretty sad. also, with some CD-Rs, it wont' read them, i have better luck with some brands of CD-Rs, but sometimes, it will take a minute before it starts to play or it won't play at all ans say "ERROR" I wouldn't get another sony. i'm looking to get the Clarion without internal amps, i have an amp waiting to be used

I don't know anything about "Bass Engine Pro" but I don't think that can be used to replace an actual subwoofer's output. A 12" sub in a sealed box should do just fine.
I suggest you know something about it before posting. No one ever suggested that it would supplant a subwoofer. What I said was that with an headunit which has it, you wouldn't necessarily need a sub. This of course means that you would have already upgraded your stock speakers...as mentioned before in the thread. No offense meant, it's jus that too many people do not put any thought into their responses around here.
I know no one suggested that Bass Engine Pro would take the place of a subwoofer. I am just giving my opinion that even with upgraded stock speakers with Bass Engine Pro, or any other bass enhancement feature, they can't actually reproduce dedicated subwoofer frequencies.
Yes, true that about adding weight to your car! My car is a little sluggish with my subs. Anyway, I have heard systems where there are no subs and they have good low end extension. I can see how people are satisfied with that setup. But for me, I like to have a little oomph in my low end.
