Boom, boom, POP
Hey everyone,
I'm running a Pioneer ten inch sub in a bandpass (300 watts max) bridged to a Kenwood 2 channel amp (300 watts max) and I'm not sure what happened to the sub. I was driving and bumping to my music pretty loud and next thing I heard was a POP then I only had my stock speakers, which are also running from a four channel Alpine amp. Can anyone give me an explain what happen? Is it because the sub couldn't handle the power or is it because my amp is sh*t. Also, can I put any sub in a pioneer bandpass box? If any can help me that would be great.
Thanks,
Gotspringrolls
PS. Mohawkboom, I know this is where you shine man. Could you help a boomless soul figure out what's going on?

Okay..so your saying the sub died?... Bandpass enclosures are not that great for power handling.
Also.. putting any sub in a bandpass enclosure will yield generally bad results. Bandpass enclosures are tuned to a subs specific T/S parameters. Putting in a different sub will completely change the sound and tuning of the enclosure.

So should I just just save my money and get two 10's in a box then? And what about my amp, is it powerful enough to handle two ten's? I was thniking of 2 type S Alpine.

better off getting a single 12" Sub. it'll be cheaper and get the results you want. an inexpensive sub that would suit your situation would be a Cerwin Vega HED. the 12's can be had for under $100 plus $40-50 for an enclosure and your set.

So is the amp fried? or the sub? Maybe just the amp fuse blew. (not sure how loud your POP was). I'm not sure what exactly causes fuses to blow (besides shorted power leads). Mohawkboom, enlighten us.

well gien the pop noise the woofer could have failed for a number of reasons...given that it was in a bandpass enclosure it;s hard to tell..the sub would have to be removed and examined to actually tell what happened. Perhaps the resricted excursion of the sub caused excessive resistance which resulted in drawing too much power and toasting the VC?

My amp isn't blown cause my dad has the same bandpass that i have and it works with the amp. The fuse is still ok aswell. So mohawkboom, you think that a 12 inch cerwin would be best suited for the amp or just price?

Avoid bandpass boxes, unless you know how to build and tune them, avoid them. They cover your speakers distortion, and you can't tell anything was wrong until it is too late.
bingo! has nothing to do with powerhandling. the cone isnt exposed, you dont hear the cone in a BP box, you hear the port, which limits what frequencies can be played. this narrow band if frequencies is called the "passband" (thus bandpass box) Doens mean the woofer doesnt PLAY hoe frequencies, just means you cant hear them.
and when you cant hear them, you have a tendancy to crank it, playing the freq you CAN play loud, as well as all those unhealthy ones (like 20 Hz and below) really loud as well. and thats exactly what happns. you crank it, and than youll get total failurre of teh driver, and youll never see it coming.

Hey thanks everyone,
I think my brother (Gotspringrolls Jr.) could use the box cause he just got his licence on Monday and he can put it into his ride. (1981 Toyota Corona) I think I'm gonna try the 12 inch woofer and see what the quality is like. If Mohawkboom says it's good, it must be.
Thanks everyone,
