Front speaker install
Front speaker install
I have a pair of Polk 602a speakers. I know you have to use a spacer to install these speaker. Will a 1 inch spacer work here?? Or do I have to use a 1/2 in???? How hard are these to install??? I also have the universal brackets from Crutchfield to use as well. any help would be appreciated.
i was goign to get those speakers fo ra while, if i can remember right, according to crutchfield, those could fit without any spacers, what's what made me want them initially.

The speakers are great, you'll enjoy them!
I did a DIY on a spacer using the stock speakers. I used a Dremel tool and cut out the old speaker and frame leaving a small ring of plastic to mount to. It was kind of trickey to mount the speaker to since all of the holes didn't line up with the spacer so what I did was use a longer metal screw and screw directly into the door.. holds GREAT and doesn't rattle..
Klam,
I have the same exact stuff. How did you modify the Scosche universal mounting bracket??? The damn thing doesn't mount flush with the Bracket. Could you explain in more detail since I am planning on doing the same thing as you. Thanks

I recently installed the Polk EX3 6 1/2s. I just used the ring that held the grill as a spacer and it worked perfectly. I tried to put the speakers in as low as I could in the weird shaped speaker hole, and I drilled holes with a 1/8th drill bit. Everything turned out cool...it was alot easier then doing the back speakers!
With the Scosche bracket, first I sawed off some of the protruding arms so that the bracket would sit flush on the door. Otherwise, those little arms will get in the way. I then used a template to mark off three holes to drill, marked spots on the bracket and the door. The three holes should correspond to holes on the speaker basket. Then I drilled the bracket. You will also need to drill the sheet metal surrounding the speaker. Make sure these are as accurate as possible. One way is to use a very small pilot drill and then go in again with the proper size drill. I used 1/8".
Then you mount speaker + foam ring + bracket to the door and secure with screws. Also, before you secure the speaker, connect the wires. It may also be a good idea to put a little grease in and around the holes to make it thread better and to prevent any rust from forming.
I've attached some pictures.

In my first message, I said a 1/2" thick spacer. I forgot to mention that there is a foam ring too. The combo of foam ring and Scosche bracket does the trick. Before you put everything together, try rolling down the windows to see if the back of the speaker clears.
