What do you think

My friend has a 2k2 ex coupe. He has the factory Honda Cd player, and he just got a Kenwood amp and a 10 inch Pioneer Sub monuted in a bandpass box. It sounds pretty good. The music doesnt get drowned out by the bass either. Do you think that this is a good idea or do you think that I should replace the stock factory deck with an after market radio??

i had both bandpass and a ported box(with the same subs/amp) and i'd have to say the bandpass sounds like crap... it doesnt even hit nearly as hard as the ported... couldnt even hear all the notes with the bandpass...

IMO,bandpass enclosures arent as efficient as ported or sealed enclosures..

some of the best boxes I have seen in show cars have been bandpass boxes.....

thats cause a bandpass box limits upper and lower frequencies allowed to play. the range is called the "pass band" and is why the box style is known as a bandpass box.

bandpass are far more efficient than ported, just like ported are more efficient than sealed.

why would you want a bandpass box? if you have crappy subs, like rockford or example, its a great way to keep them from sounding sloppy, as the upper and lower frequencies are effectively blocked by the port. a well designed bandpass box will have a DEAD FLAT response in its pass band, and slope off sharply, some even say that you do not need a crossover while running a bandpass box! (which we know is not true, what you cant hear CAN hurt you)

I absolutely agree, that you should design your own box, and sell off that BP box. I just wanted to take care of some misconceptions about bandpass boxes.

rereading yoru original question, I think that whether you upgrade yoru deck or not is up to you. with a dead stock sound system, you have far to go befor eyou really get any sort of increase in quality, it doesnt really matter what you do, since it takes everything (much the same as i/h/e) to really get the large bumps in quality.

start where you feel appropriate, whether its deck, speakers, woofers, amps, whatever.

I say you will be VERY VERY unhappy with the stock deck with any kind a quality front speakers. Speaking from recent experience I put my Boston Acoustics componets up front powered by an xtant 100w with the head unit providing the sound.. not good.. so if you are looking for SQ the replacing the HU is a DEFINATE MUST. I went with the Clarion HX-D10.. I've only heard great things about the SQ from this HU.. You can get the all over the place for under 300 , $269 shipped from onlinecarstero.com. BTW I agree 100% with white rabbit.. BP boxes are good for shoty subs.. very very monotone.. loud, but no SQ at all. it's actually amusing to listen to... I went with a sealed box for SQ it still hit's but it sounds good also.

Good Luck
