HU installation question

Ooops! I meant to post this message as a new thread, rather than the reply I did earlier:

I purchased a Pioneer 4400 this week from BB, and I am going to do the install over the holiday. I have looked at the DIY here for removing the factory headunit, and I noticed that the instructions included removing the center console to get at two screws at the base of the 12V power supply panel. The instructions I got from both Crutchfield and handa-accessories (and one other website I can't recall) for removing the head unit don't mention this step - their directions begin with prying out the clips on the 12V power supply panel and going from there.

Has anyone done an installation without loosening the center console? Thanks for your input.

You have to remove the panel since those two little bolts hold in the radio....have to remove those first before you can remove the radio.

Appreciate the reply, APS. I know that the 12V panel has to come out to get to the two bolts that hold the radio in - I am wondering about how exactly everyone got it out; is it just held on with the clips, or are there screws holding it in at the bottom, as shown in the DIY? The directions that I have don't mention the extra step of removing the emergency brake tray, loosening the console, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Just pull the 12v panel right out. It's held on with 2 clips I believe. I did that, didnt have to remove the center console (and in fact, that was quite a pain to do, which is why I tried just yanking the 12v)

Finally, I have everything ready to do the install...it has been a busy couple of weeks! Harness all crimped, sleeve secured in the mounting kit... wish me luck!

if you have the schosche kit, watch out - some of them may not fit exactly - I had to sand the edge on mine a small amount

Actually, dragoon, I did have just a little trouble getting the kit to snap into place. I finally figured out that I had to snap the top part in first, then the bottom (which is not the way it wanted to go in); now I think I may be taking the 4400 back in favor of the 6400. Like many of the posters here, I am having a LOT of trouble seeing the display during the day. I hate to spend the extra money, but I did not think it was going to bother me as much as it is. Actually, I used these instructions a lot more than I did the ones I got from Crutchfield. They show exactly where the clips are:

BTW, it may sound goofy, but I used a smooth butterknife to pry out the center panel (no serrated edge), and I did not damage anything.

Good luck!
