How to wire HU so it will work without key in Ignition

I was just curious if I could just tap into the 12V power on the headlights or another always on circuit so I can turn my radio on whenever I want and not need the key in the ignition. I was going to mount a switch with it so its not always on. Anyone done this before? Just curious because my friends A4's stereo will go on without the key in the ignition. Also, will my 4 channel amp turn on if I do this? Thanks

You can run a jumper off your constant 12 volt wire and connect that to the ignition turn on wire on the HU..but you'll need a switch between the 2 to be able to turn it off. ..also the amps will come on as well but that's just begging to kill your battery real fast...

youve got teh ACC wire for your headunit. just make it a constant 12 volt source and throw a switch in, like mowhawk said...

do this all the time when putting amps on a stock deck, exept we of course use the acc wire instead. but if we used the main power line, then they could run their system whenever they wanted, car on or off.

I have to second mowhawk again, being able to turn on your system with the car off, regardless of how much power it can draw, is asking for trouble....

when i was first working on my stereo in the civic, I would work late into teh night, listening to what i had done already. I was using an 85x2 earthquake amp, with teh volume less than a third of the way up. (car off, of course) I listened to music for about 3-5 hours, somewhere in that range, then around 3.30 am i went inside to go to bed. no problems. so i get up at 10 the next morning and start eveything back up again, after ten minutes i slammed my door shut, going to work in teh trunk. the car stops dead completely. i thought at teh time i mesed something up with my door. car wont start. totally dead.

jumpstarted it, has been fine since, and i sure learned my lesson.......even at volume 10 of 30 with 150 watts of power......
