I hacked apart the factory speaker with a dremel tool, using the basket as a "spacer". Works perfectly.
Or, build a spacer out of MDF OR get a spacer from a car audio shop. They're cheap.

I'de buy a universal speaker spacer and mount that by drilling holes in the sheet metal and using some screws. Check it: Injection Molded Speaker Adapters I bought the SS65 Universal 5-1/4" or 6-1/2" Speaker Spacer.

Just something that I found at a hardware store. I think it was Home Depot. They have to be long enough to go past the spacer and bite into the metal. Although I want to redo this. Instead I want to install these threaded studs that you can screw bolts into. I think that will be cleaner. Also, I used little washers so that I could spread the force evenly across the speaker walls and not do any damage. I'de look for those little studs with threaded holes and bolts with large heads though. That would be a very clean install.

You used the speaker spacer that I reccomended? If the speaker sticks out too far how is it possible that there is a gap betwean the front of the speaker and the door? Can you please elaborate...
