Speedometer won't return to 0 ("bounces")

2005 VP Civic

Speedometer decides to jump to 80/90 -- then "works" with 80/90 as 0...sometimes it moves back.

I can actually "force" it back sometimes by "switching" the ignition to "on" position then off "repeatedly" it moves back about 3mph each time -- gets it back to 0 -- probably not a good thing. I've only done this a few times. It will then usually work fine for a short period (10 minutes to even a hour or so once)

So with speedometer at 100mph as 0 I ran the DIY cluster test -- everything tested fine but speedometer of course didn't return to 0.

I did the "hack" noted above to get speedometer back to 0 -- then ran the DIY cluster test again. Everything worked fine, even speedometer doing a full sweep.

I repeated the test a little later to show someone-- at this point during speedometer sweep it made it to got "jittery" and made it to 40 as the new 0....

If I plug into the OBD-II and watch speed it reports fine.

After reading all comments around it sounds to me like I need to replace the instrument cluster -- I see one on ebay with 104k (I have 150k) and it's for a DX but looks the same and is supposed to fit my VP sedan.

Everything I see seems to imply it's a pretty easy fix (I've watched a few videos and such) -- a few screws, some plastic clips, and some wire harnesses to detach/reattach.

Would anyone like to share any other opinions/recommendations?

That Civic is just itching to do some fast n furious racing, it's in it's blood I guess. It's mother n father had a lot of NOS genes.

But yeah with the OBD2 scanner, if it displays the correct speed then that tells me that the speed sensor and the wiring for the sensor is correct. The wiring for the instrument cluster or the cluster is faulty.

Pretty much what he said.
Connect to scanner and see whats up. Probably the gauge if you dont have a CEL.

Again, everyones problem is different.

Hook up a scanner to it. If the VSS reads zero replace the VSS.

If it reads the actual speed replace the cluster.
