need help with the sub/bass problem

OK... mohawk pretty much explained part of the reason i am unsatisfied with my bass........ my sub.

it a kenwood eXcelon 10'. i have heard it in my friends car ( he has a 2k1civic too) and it hits pretty hard.
now i have a semi - custom box. now when it hits it sounds really bad..... i cant feel like my seats shake or anything.....i dont know if it is the setting that i have my eXcelon amp too or if it is the box... or if it is a bad sub.... please help me out.
