Re: DVD Players

im running a pioneer D3 double DIN in dash dvd/navigation/ipod/bluetooth. before that i had a pioneer avic-n1 nav/dvd/ipod. I like the D3 FAR better. Flip outs get annoying.

Re: DVD Players

i love my jenson flip out every time i start my car it flips out and i feel like james bond lol.but there are pros and cons the flip out will block the vents behind it it does in my 04 any way so you mite get over heating problems but mine has been working fine for two years threw winters and evan a roll over accident . but the key feature you get with a flip out and not with double din units is the ability to adjust the screen which gives you the ability to see things on the screenno matter what position your in which is nice so my opinion is the flip out.

Some of the new in-dash screens have the ability to adjust angles, albeit not to the degree of a flip out.

I'd also say most flip out screens are larger (7") versus their in-dash counterparts (6"). I've never sat in a car with a 6" screen, but when I watch dvds on my 7" screen, I feel like it's a little bit too small.

I had one in my car until someone broke in and tried to steal it. Cool thing was that it still worked and insurance gave me the newer model. I sold both on Ebay and made around $650.

Re: DVD Players

What do those usually run?
In dash or flip ups.
I just bought a nice 98 ex,
but the interior is mostly stock except for the stereo,
so I'm trying to figure out some ways to play around with it.

see how it blocks the vents in the winter i just pop the vent off and shove black material in the so heat doesn't blow directly on the back of the screen.

Face is out prob because the thieves tried to do whatever they could to get it out. Probably pulled the screen out. It went back in tho after I powered the car.

Re: DVD Players

Heya, new to the forum here. I got an Alpine IVA-W203 last week. Got it at an auction for a great price. It was a bit of a pain to install because in order to watch DVDs Alpine requires it to be connected to the parking brake and also the foot brake. Needless to say double din install on the civic is a pain to begin with this made it even more time consuming. I'll get a few pictures at some point. The only other issue i had with the install is the head unit has such a thick face that i had to install it at a bit of an up angle in order for the unit to open. I just threw it in like that because I ran out of time, going to give it another shot at some point and straighten it out, i already shaved some of the trim plate or whatever you call it so it opened up without issues. It's a real nice unit but its expensive, I would never have gotten it but it was half price.

The only other issue with the unit is that everything seems to be an add on. 300 dollars for GPS, 50 dollars for I-Pod (25 on ebay) ... etc. seems never ending.

Re: DVD Players

I personally like the CarPC route. You can do WAY more with it in terms of customizing(Plus GPS Reciever and Software runs your nowhere close to 300 like tbohar payed). And with a few add on's like fusionbrain you can control pretty much anything your skills will allow you to with the car all from the screen!

Yea I realize that it can be bypassed but Alpine has taken the security to the next level. In order to watch movies you have to have the foot brake engaged and then raise the parking brake, then release the foot brake otherwise you won't get access. They realized how easy it is to bypass the DVD so they just took it a step further, still easy to bypass. I like the car PC route also but unfortunately I'm just not skilled enough nor do I have enough time for that kind of set up, even though it is sweet and I am good with computers (figures).

thats pretty lame how they go through that much trouble to control how you use their product. i dont know why, other than legal reasons, that they would care if you watch movies while driving. not like you would be completely staring at the screen

I know it's a bit of an old thread but I believe this is why they have the safety on the DVD players. I think in order to watch DVDs while your driving you have to be a little bit crazy. It's just not worth it.

DVD Player Focus in Alaska Murder Trial
Murder Trial in Alaska Focuses on Whether a Pickup Truck's Dashboard DVD Distracted a Motorist

The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska July 27, 2004 — When a pickup truck crossed the double yellow line along Seward Highway and killed two occupants of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, police initially thought the accident was another tragic mistake by a momentarily distracted driver.
Then they spotted the dashboard DVD player.

In what may be the first trial of its kind in the nation, prosecutors have accused the pickup truck's driver of second-degree murder for watching a movie instead of the road when he crashed head-on into the Jeep.

The pickup's driver, Erwin J. Petterson Jr., denies using the DVD player as he drove north on Oct. 12, 2002 and contends he was only listening to music from a compact disc, said his attorney, Chuck Robinson.

"It's an excessive charge for what happened here," he said. "This was not a murder. Even the state medical examiner said during cross-examination that the manner of death for the people in the other car was accidental."

Petterson, 29, is accused of killing Robert Weiser, 60, and his wife Donna Weiser, 56, of Anchorage, while on a three-hour drive between Kenai and Anchorage. In his truck was the equivalent of a home entertainment system a DVD player, speakers and a Sony PlayStation 2.

While no Alaska law prohibits operating a DVD player in view of a driver, prosecutor June Stein said the facts warranted charging Petterson under one of two theories: that he knew his conduct was substantially certain to cause death, or that he knowingly engaged in conduct showing extreme indifference to human life.

Initial Alaska State Trooper reports said Petterson was at fault when he took his eyes off the road to reach for a soda. Stein, though, will try to prove that the DVD player was on, apparently playing the movie "Road Trip."

"We know it was," she said. "It was wired so that the screen was in the open position when the ignition key was turned out."

The murder trial, which got under way last week in Kenai Superior Court, may be the first of its kind in the nation, said Matthew Swantson, director of communications for the Consumer Electronics Association, a trade association.

Installed as recommended, DVD players and TV screens are either visible only from the back seats or will not work unless the vehicle is in park. But owners can defeat the safety measures by installing the devices themselves, as Petterson did, according to prosecutors.

Robinson said he expects prosecutors to have trouble winning a second-degree murder conviction. "I think the prosecution is going to have a tough time proving the mental state of Mr. Petterson," he said. "It's a tragic accident that happens all the time on our highways."

Liz Neblett, spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said more than 25 percent of police-reported crashes are distraction related, which covers everything from cell phone use to changing channels on a radio, screaming at kids, eating, applying makeup or reading a newspaper.

Vehicles can be equipped with fax machines, cell phones and two-way radios. But none should be used if they interrupt the concentration of drivers, she said. "It's a no-brainer. If it's distracting, don't do it," Neblett said.

After the crash, Petterson and his passenger, roommate Jonathan Douglas, were transported to an Anchorage hospital. Within hours, Douglas called his ex-wife and told her he was not sure how the collision occurred because he was "spacing out on a movie they were watching," according to prosecutors. The woman is scheduled to testify.

David Weiser, 34, the son of the slain couple, said only two people know what happened in the cab of the truck. But equipping a truck with entertainment options that can be used while driving goes beyond a momentary distraction of putting on makeup or using a cell phone, he said.

"This takes forethought, this takes methodical steps," David Weiser said. "You have to go to the store, plop over money, install it, and install it so it can be used without a brake employed.

"I view it as no different than walking into a bar, having five beers within an hour and getting behind the wheel," said Weiser, who quit an eight-year career as a loan originator in Boston to attend the trial.

Driving laws have not kept up with technological changes, Weiser said. He plans to work toward changing that after Petterson's trial is over.

"I would like for the jury to sit and hear the evidence, and if the evidence shows what I believe to be true, that his conviction reflect that," he said.

Re: DVD Players

i had a clarion flip out 1st, had to get the motorized part changed for over 300. didnt like the flip out because 1 blocked the ac vents and 2 when it was hott outside the back would get so hott you couldnt touch it. sold that got a double din duel. it was tight had it bypassed so i could watch movies while i drive and molded the dash. then got broken into and someone stole it. had it for 3 months and insurence paid for it. now i have a alpine double din iva-w205 and love it.also i have it bypassed with a toggle switch so i can watch movies while i drive.here are the pics of the two old ones and will post the new one when i take a pic of it.

Yea, I have mine bypassed as well but I haven't actually watched a movie on it. I love the IVA w-205 but why aren't there more visual settings?? I want a fancy background, I know you can download it but it should come preloaded if you ask me. Still, a real nice DVD unit. I like how you have it molded though silver, mine isn't molded like that. Is that a piece you bought or something you did yourself?

thanks.i used the regular dash kit for a regular car radio and cut out the bottom bin, put the triming on and used bondo to mold it.it was something i did myself. the thing with the iva-205 and all the others when you go to the settings you have to have the bypass switch on to go through all the other settings. if you are on the settings and turn off the switch they will go away. i dont know if you noticed that?

Yea I did notice, and my apologies I have the IVA W203 not 205. I installed it without the bypass at first because I ran out of time and had no settings on it. It really sucked!!! It's real nice now that I have everything working good. Yea your molding job looks fantastic, I'd love to do it but I have carbon fibre there and I really don't want to get rid of it!!! I'll take a pic of mine tommorow and post it up!

Why dont people with the flip outs put the screen in the bottom din? It is possible, I have my one din cd player in the bottom. Not in the vents way then.
