Muffled sound from one speaker

Hi everyone

I have an 02 EX Coupe, and recently the rear passenger side speaker started sounding buzzy / fuzzy / muffled at certain low- and mid-range frequencies. The problem seems to come and go. I've checked what little external wiring I can see, and it seems solid... jiggling it around doesn't seem to make a difference anyway

I don't know much about audio systems, so I have no idea what this might indicate, but if it's something I can fix myself I'd definitely prefer to do that rather than drop a few hundred bucks at a shop. Can anyone offer advice?

Thank you!

i had that problem a few times and it turned out to be a bad connection between speaker and wire.

Re: Muffled sound from one speaker

They are OEM, I've never touched them. The most annoying part is that the problem is intermittent, so it's very difficult to troubleshoot. At the same time, I guess this might point to a loose wire/connection.

gearbox, would you mind describing exactly what connection you found was loose and how you fixed it? I've checked the plug connector and the points where the wires from the connector are soldered onto the speaker and both seem okay.

Re: Muffled sound from one speaker

the connector part where the stock wires go into the speaker were loose and corroded on mine. its possible the speaker just went bad i guess too.

Re: Muffled sound from one speaker

check the terminals on ur speaker..they may be loose..u could always buy a new speaker connecter (OEM) and cut the old one off.

Re: Muffled sound from one speaker

Thanks for the advice, I do now believe that it's simply a problem with the connector. I disconnected and cleaned it and it has been behaving better since then. I was just surprised that this worked, because if the connector were bad, I would expect the sound to cut out completely, not just at certain frequencies.
