Electical Burning Smell While Bumping?

OK so I got a 400watt Alpine amp hooked up to my JL 12's, unported box. This is all connected to my stock HU. I have had it for months without a hitch, but yesterday I was bumping harder than usual, for longer than usual. After about a half hour I noticed that electrical burning smell. I got out and lifted my hood, that is where it was coming from. I didn't notice any particular areas that were smoking or burnt, the connections for the amp were fine. Any ideas why this happend or what it was?

Smell was frm under the hood.. or from the subs.. if it's under the hood that's just your alternator getting relly hot and burning off dust and stuff.... it's from your trunk..you frying your voice coils...

Errrr- I'm not sure. It was professionally installed, so I assume they knew the correct size to use.

i dont think its the alt. it's only 400 watts... i'm thinking it's the JL's(are they 12w0's?). this happened to me too, watch take out your subs and smell the back of it, its the smell of your voice coils burning...

Thanks guys- I really don't think it was my voice coils, the smell was coming from the engine. I'll get it checked out.
