Sony CDX-GT820IP
Sony CDX-GT820IP
Hey,
Obviously I am new here, but I have a question. I am looking at getting the Soy Xplod CDX-GT820IP head unit for my '04 Civic Sedan, and I was wondering if anyone had heard if it was any good or not, or if anyone has it by a chance.
I know Sony isn't really the best for head units but it seems to be a good unit with all of the iPod/color-coordination features I am looking for for my car.
Thanks, meiseman

Have you checked out crutchfield.com yet? They have reviews from people(some reliable and some not). Also it tells you about fitment and comes with the extras ready.
Re: Sony CDX-GT820IP
Actually, I have a CDX-GT610Ui and it works great. I never had an issue with skipping CDs, or not reading them. The only time it was skipping was when I was going down a dirt road in big bear, and it was bumpy and rocky as hell.

hypnotic,
I've been looking at the UI series of cd player for an alternate application. Have you had the opportunity to use that CD player to control music on a USB drive or the IPOD ONLY through the remote? Avoiding all use of the faceplate? Can you speak to some potential issues?:
1. ease of ipod control
2. ease of music navigation
3. method of music organization via USB drive aka folder based, tag based, etc.
4. known limits on the sony file structure? (can only support 256 folders, unlimited, somewhere in between, or less, etc.)
5. in your opinion, WOULD musical navigation on a USB drive be just as easy if you had 32 meg of WAV files versus 32 gig of 64 bit encoded MP3? (in other words, can you effectively navigate through 8 tracks as you can 800 tracks?)
(keeping in mind all navigation is done using only the remote, never faceplate control)
thanks hypnotic

Re: Sony CDX-GT820IP
I used to have a sony head unit in my first car, long time ago. It wasn't bad it just didn't have a great pre-amplification. It ran a really low pre-amp voltage, something like 2 volts, this was an older model though. The newer ones might be better. I ended up ditching the sony unit for another one, because I was using two amps for subs and speakers. When you're amplifying your sound system for subs and speakers, you want a clear, clean, strong signal, low harmonic distortion and good adjusting capabilities. Have you surfed through PAS mag website? They might have a review for that unit. Or you could search Car Audio magazine. They might have it too.

2. The music navigation is easy, but at the same time I think it could vastly be improved. Maybe a carputer, or possibly a reciever with all digital music handling might be up your alley.
3. The shame of the organization is that music is not really organized, its in folders of 30 songs I believe, and from my iPod it seems a bit random. Then again, I do have a shuffle so I dont know about any other iPods
4. I never had that many songs, so I wouldnt know
5. In honesty, the navigation would get you frustrated with 800+ songs, as the navigation is kind of hinky when it comes to unlabled folders. Though my girlfriend just purchased an 80 gb ipod so I will test it from there.
Re: Sony CDX-GT820IP
I got the same unit. I dont like 3 things on the unit.
1). LED light around the sound **** is too god darn bright even after it dims at night
2). Equalizer on this thing is useless.... presets are ok... but if u want to customize it comes with a 3 band equalizer and its useless.
3). will not work with any ipod over 3rd generation
other than that I like the ease of use.
