speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

ok, here is the deal, i pulled my gauge faces today, along with needles, in order to pull out a few light bulbs out(they fell out cuz of my subs) because they were rattling around, and not lighting the cluster, anyway, now that i reinstalled the gauges and needles, my speedo is waaaaaay off, it jumps, and doesnt register my speed even remotely closely, im going crazy, i apologize about the vid quality, but i had to take it while shifting, and driving, so its crap, but it serves its purpose

ps.. i rep for good help

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

i say u take out ur guages again. it could be a grounding problem that you missed a bulb.

also, if not, it probably ur VSS sensor in ur car that screwy...(vehicle speed sensor)

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

maybe its just a shitty connection. like when your driving its not connecting all the way. its just the speedo acting up not the tach too right?

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

run the gauge cluster self diagnostic. it's in the big helms manual, you gotta do a series of turning the key on and off and hitting the trip/reset and the gauge needles will self test and the cluster can give error codes in the display. i have the manual, but it's in the car and its raining, but i'll post it tomorrow if no one has by then. it'll atleast give you a place to start your troubleshooting. our gauges are pretty simple, balance coil design, very reliable, but youve definately got something going on with voltage regulation. ie. ground or vss signal.

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

heres the procedure:
"here it is:
1. push/hold the trip button.
2. turn the lighting switch on.
3. turn the ignition switch on.
4. (within 5 seconds) turn the lighting switch OFF, then ON, and OFF again.
5. (within 5 seconds) release the trip button
6. push and release the button 4 times repeatedly.

this starts the gauge cluster self diagnostics...

the beeper will sound
the lights will flash
the LCD will flash
the needles will sweep

if they/one does not sweep properly, replace the cluster."

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

I think the problem is, you pushed the needel on too hard and it is sticking.

I would suggest pulling the speedo needle off and then turn the key on. Let the little metal ?rod? set where it should for 0mph, then push "Softly' the speedo needle back on. This should reset it to 0 and fix the problem. (This is what I had to do with my Accord.) Good luck and keep us posted.

Shitty situation, but good advice throughout. I'd try alpha's idea first, then metalviper's.

I couldn't get viper's sequence to work on my car. Are we talking interior lights or headlights here? I'll probably end up trying it before anyone wakes up and reads this post.

Re: speedometer problem, electrical gurus needed, vid included

ya ill clarify
"1. push/hold the trip button.
2. turn the headlight switch on completely.
3. turn the ignition switch on to accessories (II).
4. (within 5 seconds) turn the headlight switch OFF, then ON, and OFF again.
5. (within 5 seconds) release the trip button
6. push and release the trip button 4 times repeatedly.

this starts the gauge cluster self diagnostics...

the beeper will sound
the lights will flash
the LCD will flash
the needles will sweep

if they/one does not sweep properly, replace the cluster."
