Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
thats good enough, around 1/2 their max is still okay. you could get a slightly more powerful amp if you want.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
but i would have to try to find one that has less than 60w(rms) x 4 because of the Infinity 6022i 6.5 2-Way Speakers = 60w(rms) x 2. Wouldn't they be overpowered?
Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
So what happens if speakers are overpowered? I have an amp sending 60 rms, but the new speakers I'm looking at have a rms range of 20 - 50 rms. Am I more likely to blow the new speakers>?

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
ya the key is you dont want the speakers to distort from too much power. so turn the gain way down and adjust up. if it starts thumping and sounding crappy, turn it down.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
you can get distortion much easier from underpowering the speakers too. that's even more likely to blow the speakers (damage wise, not smoke and stuff) than too much power.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
ya i cut mine in half and put one piece above the crash bar and one below. better than nothing. i used superglue and my whole front door install was done in 10F weather with a heatgun lol so idk if they are even stuck there anymore. not much else you can do with the limited space to work with.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
its not needed, you can always use something else. but i wouldnt just do the sound deadening or it will reflect sound waves around and mess it up even worse. you need to put some sort of accoustic foam. you can put deadening, but make sure the top layer is a type of cell foam to absorb the sound. partsexpress.com also sells deflex power pads but im not sure if they will fit behind the speaker.

bump if anyone has 1 inch spacers on their speaker and the panel wont go back on, you can cut off the hollow plastic ring that is molded to the back of the door panel speaker "grill" to get more space. i just did this and now they clipped back in no problem.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
also im not sure if i mentioned this, but you should also definately upgrade your receiver power and ground wires. the stock harness is way too small and also not properly grounded. you want to run a thicker power wire from the deck directly to the battery (the yellow power wire, not the red ignition signal wire). then run a thicker ground wire from the deck to a good chassis ground (no painted surface). i only am running tweeters off the deck power, and after i did this mod, i had to turn the treble down 1dB cause it was too loud lol.

Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
okay i discovered that tonight my passenger speaker finally went dead. its been crackling for the past month and it hasnt sounded the same since. I ended up having to remove both door panels and completely rewire the speaker connections due to those stupid pnp connectors that all the metal was corroded to the point of no connection. i just chopped them off and wound the wire a few times around each terminal directly. then put some e-tape on them and threw it back together. sound is awesome again, what a big difference one speaker can make! keep those connections clean! im betting the water and humidity finally did away with it. but hey 6 yrs later im still on my original infinity speakers and amp, now thats quality. and they still sound great.
Re: DIY: gearbox's guide to car stereo
yah, when i wired my kappa perfects in, i ran new speaker wires directly to my amp cause the stock ones are so small. didn't think about the power/ground wires though. probably going to upgrade that now, now that you mentioned it.
