Question Aftermarket speakers

I'm trying to search for aftermarket speakers for my 04 Civic LX sedan. I went to Best Buy and Circuit City, and checked online at Crutchfield's, and the systems show that my car will fit 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speakers on the door. Is this correct? How is this possible? I don't want to remove the speaker to find out what I need. I wish there was concrete answer so that I can start deciding on which ones I want. Anyone know what size I need?

is it a four door? sorry i'm not very keen to newer model Civics... it might be that the front doors are 6 1/2 and the rears are 5 1/4 by the way i hope you were going with pioneer speakers for aftermarket speakers......

i'm gonna say 6x9 on the deck in the back and 6 1/2 should fit on the front door... just because your stock speakers might be 5 1/4 doesn't mean 6 1/2 won't fit... i would say just take the panel off to make sure... you have to take it off anyway to replace them... might as well do it right before you make the trip to the store to buy them...

well check the back brackets gfused... they might have a space that would fit 6x9's but they placed 6 1/2 in there it never hurts to look... all you have to do is open the trunk and take a gander under the rear deck...

sedans are all 6.5s. i don't think you'll be able to put in aftermarket speakers without making or buying spacers for the doors. i believe spacers on crutchfield will fit both 5 1/4 and 6.5 speakers. just make sure that you have enough clearance for the magnets.

Yeah the sedans are 6.5 all around. If you have the after markets professionally installed, you shouldnt run into any problems. However, if you are doing the install yourself, you need to know that honda uses a very weird mounting system for their oem speakers that uses pressure clips on the front doors. For this reason, there are no pre drill holes that will accept screws from your new speakers, therefore and adapter will be needed. Also keep in mind the depth of the speaker. Speakers that are too deep are going to hit on the window, and you wont be able to roll it down all the way. I have the depth from the door panel, where the speaker would be mounted flat, to the window when it is rolled down at about 2-2/18". <----Just an approximate measurement. I just saved myself the trouble of having a problem and bought shallow mount speakers for the front doors (jbl p652s). Also keep in mind that while normal 6.5 speakers are obviously round, but the hole in the front door is a very weird shape, almost like a circle with a flat edge on one side (if that makes any sense). If you are buying 2/3/4/5 way speakers, remember to take into account how far the tweeter sticks out above the speaker, because it might hit the plastic grill on the door panel. And FYI, crutchfield's fit guide for speakers is usually right and is a decent reference, but it was wrong in my case and told me that my jbl speakers would not fit when they actually did. Hope this all helps.
