Sound System Opinions

So i recently just purchased a few things for my audio system. I know my basics about wiring, and power, etc. But i'd like some more 'professional' opinions.

I purchased
Infinity Perfect Kappa 10.1 Subwoofers x 2
Panasonic CQC8313 Head Unit
Sony Xplod D9001GTR Amplifier (I haven't purchased yet, but the one I'm considering.)
What do you think about that?

The amp is where I'm having troubles, I don't know what amp to get. The Sony one seems good, but from what I know about Sony, it probably isn't. Just wondering what you would recommend for an amplifier, or if you would even recommend that Xplod.

Now, for the wiring I plan to wire the subs in a parallel circuit if i get a mono amp. I think that should work, to reduce my output from the amp, but have the same output in both subs?

Anyways, you know more than me most likely, so any recommendations are welcome. Keep in mind I'm not made of money.

Thanks.

Go with a custom fiberglass ALPINE system. Sony no good, and RF is old school.

I love it when my amp Xplods!

You're on the right track with a mono amplifier.

RF, Alpine, Infinity are all plenty good.

So I'm looking for a Mono Amp with around or over 350Watts RMS?

What about these?:
Alpine MRP-M450
MTS TC4001
RF P325.1

Those are all great choices.

I've only installed the Alpine one but I'm a fan of it. Real small footprint and great power for the size.

i have the same head unit! but i would go with the pioneer, i have this with two sony 12"s and it hits very hard and is very easy, doesnt get real hot and easy to make sound good with some"tuning"
Buy the Pioneer 800W Mono-Channel Amplifier (GM7200M) and other Car Amplifiers at circuitcity.com

I may go for the alpine then, since it's cheapest and seems pretty good.

Now, as for my subs, I believe i read somewhere that my subs run at 2ohms when paralleled/bridged together. Right or Wrong? I really hope they're two ohms. ;(

Also, what about dynamat, should I see if I need it first, before installing it all?

Thanks a lot.

turns out my subs are 4ohms, the 10.1D's are 2 or 8 ohms, depending how you set them up.

So now i need an amp that puts out 350 at 4 ohms? Or is the Alpine amp in my previous post still sufficient (220 at 4ohms, 400 at 2). If not I may get the Alpine MRP650, puts out 400 at 4, and 600 at 2.

You're good. The two subs in parallel are one two ohm load. That amp is I think you stated 400watts @ two ohms. That's a decent enough amount of power for most.

Alright, so my system is all set.

Now, question about wirings. I get all my wiring for free, just I have a few questions.

How do i figure out what the diameter of my ring terminals should be? Aswell, the guy i know who's installing it at his shop, says to get 4gauge power and ground wire, yet my amp says 8gauge is recommended? Or maybe I'm talking ****, but i think i read that somewhere.

8AWG is fine with this amp, being a mono it's more efficient than a normal 2-channel. Also, 8 gauge spades will fit into the terminals perfectly. Four gauge wouldn't hurt at all but it's going to be trickier to get a terminal to attach to it and the amp.

I might do 4 or 8, we'll see what happens.

But, are the mounting kits sold at crappy tire (Canadian Tire) any good? Or are they cheap? Picture. Are they all basically the same quality..or..?

If your civic is an 02 that kit isn't gonna work. I like the Metra 99-7897 or the AI HON-K809 if it's a standard 7th gen.

It's an 02 civic Si coupe. Where can i buy those mounting kits? If i get the metra one, then I'm going to have an open space below my deck wouldn't I?

I picked up some 4gauge welding cable for my power cable, and some 18gauge speaker cable. I'm hoping this will work, as it was free, so anybody who knows wire let me know. As well, do you think it would be worth it to spend $100+ on wiring kits, or just to get my own wire like I've been doing?

If it's an Si (hatchback, not just a canadian ex/si) I'd look at AI HON-K811. More than likely you're going to be able to find it cheapest on the ol' internet.

Your wiring sounds just fine.

Up to date news:

Finally getting it isntalled as we speak. The guy said that I can't wire my subs in parallel because it'll put out at around 1 ohm, not two? I said i don't think that's true, but what can you do. So my subs are gonna be 4ohms at around 220, so like 110watts a piece..

edit: Well, turns out the alpine amp isn't powerful enough for the two subs. He wired it in series because apparently he can't parallel them, so i only have one sub hooked up so far, and I'm looking at purchasing a new amp. I'm unsure what amp to get now. Any help? What do you think about this amp. If bridged it puts out 350Watts RMS x 2, that'll be sufficient won't it?

I'm confused. The subs you linked to were single four ohm voice coil Infinitys. Is there any chance they are actually dual voice coil?? Because that's the only way he'd be right.

yeah, if they're singles, he's full of crap. 4+4 parallel = 2ohms. now if they're dual, then yes, it will be 1 ohm total. even if he can bridge them and run parallel, your output to each sub will be half the bridged RMS of the amp. i didn't quite follow which amp you ended up getting.

I ended up going with the Alpine M650. It's enough to get the job done.

Although, how goos is dynamat? I may get some for under my license plate for now. Just wondering if i should use that or a piece of thin foam the size of my license plate, just to stop the rattling.

dynamat will help, but you'll probably need something else too for the plate. what i did was went to Lowe's and bought some 1/4" thick dense foam weatherstripping. got adhesive on one side. i put it on the back of the license plate and that pretty much got rid of the plate rattle. now there's other rattles in the trunk.

Just ran into my first problem, other then the rattling.

My phono plugs from my are currently connected to a dual phono to 3.5mm adapter, so i can plug it into my ipod headphone jack. Sometimes it cuts out, and you can tell its something with the wire connection, but the jacks are secured into my adapter, and the 3.5 is securely in my ipod. So there's one other option, the plugs behind my HU. question is, how can i get back there to make sure they aren't loose? Do i have to remove the whole HU?

Thanks.

yes remove the HU and check the cables. buy some cables that go from RCA to headpone rather than using the adapter. they're cheap.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but my RCA's are already plugged in, and i'm unsure on how to remove my deck, so i settled with the adapter.

removing the HU is easy. if you have a manual, it's easier than an auto.
