Rear speaker replacement - 6x9 vs component setup
I searched the internet a bit but I couldn't find a real definative answer of which would be best for me.
My current setup:
component set in doors
15" sub
Which ever I decide on will be powered by an amp (~100 watts per channel)
I am lacking midbass hardcore, so my question is which will give me the best lower end response? I also want crispy highs, but I'm not sure if adding another set of great tweeters will be too much. My Kicker components are superb in the upper mid/high department and I'm looking at the Soundstream SST6.9 and the Soundstream Picasso 6.5 component set
Spec sheets for both 6x9 and 6.5 component sets are very similar. Which will produce the most bass while still giving the full sound spectrum? the 6x9s are supposed to be the ****. i haven't heard anything about the components.
As always...Thanks guys!
And if you have any suggestions of other brands, please let me know.

hey.. don't go 6 by 9
they are mor eso for bass.. mine hit pretty hard...
the tweeters and speakers work great for what you looking for...
my seup is on fosgates with 2 5" and 4 1" tweeters in front with 2 6 by 9s in back... its real clear

Eggroll makes a good point. I installed some Alpine Type S 6x9s and they were hitting the trunk spring. Nothing a little bit of grinding couldn't handle but I have heard stories about them completely hindering the trunk closing.
just get gas shocks.. they work great... heres the diy...

Thanks guys! I think I may go with the 6x9s. 3ohm will be a nice extra little boost to get them to the recommended 150 watts.
The specs for those say they are 3.46" mounting depth. I read in another thread that we have a 3 7/16" depth. I really don't mind grinding off .0225" to get them to fit.....if they are 3.46" top mount. If they don't fit, the gas shocks DIY looks cool, easy and cheap.

6.5 if you want solid midbass thump, 6x9 if you want lower bass almost like a sub. i listened to 6x9 and once was enough. i like 6.5 much better even tho it doesnt have as much deep bass. but if you want that bass you need a sub anyway.
There's no added benefit to the front stage with components in the rear so it depends on where you're concerned about having good sound. Do you want to set up a good system which is clear in both the front and rear of the vehicle? Then with the setup you already have, adding a set of rear components would be ideal.
However, you mentioned midbass, what about a hardcore 3-way system in the front doors and factory rears for those who sit in the back seat? The sound for you the driver would be much better than a setup with 2-way comps front and rear. With a 15 in the rear and no larger than a 6.5 in the front you have a gap in the physical size of your drivers. Even if you go with a 6x9 in the rear there's still a range of frequencies that won't be amplified as much as others.
Obviously there are a lot of little things to take in to account. The 3-way setup in the front doors is easier said than done and depending on your skill level can end up pricey but the rewards can be worth it. There's also crossover and time alignment issues that come to mind. Some would be surprised but a 7" or even an 8" midbass can be massaged into the front doors on the coupes.
Sorry I kind of got off topic there but back to your question; the 6x9s in the rear probably won't give the kind of midbass you're looking for. Likely the 15 will mask the sound arriving to you quite a bit. Only reason to do components in the rears would be for those sitting in the rear. I hope this helps you out somewhat.

yeah man, it hepled a lot. so you suggest a 2 or 3 way 6.5 for the rear? the only person who is ever in my back seat is my 15 month old son....and I doubt he cares much about SQ at this point. (its never loud with him in the car anyway) I have no intention on replacing the perfectly capable 6.5 components in the doors, I just need something to fill the frequency range and make it a little louder.
If you want to go with a 6.5 in the rear I wouldn't be too concerned about 2-way or 3-way coaxial. I would want to match up to the Kicker's you've got in the front doors, not necessarily from the exact same model line but similar. If it's a 2-way that's great and if it's a 3 that's fine too. The difference in one more small driver in the back won't affect what you hear much at all. Going with either style of 6.5 coax in the rear should probably give you the little extra fill you're looking for.

Since the closest dealer for the Soundstreams are at least 2 hours from me, I've decided to go in a different direction. And partly because I listened to a set of Focal 6x9s at my local tweeter. wow!
The Polk DBs sounded very nice as well. Kicker was ok, but I was very impressed with the Polks at Circuit City.
I'm probably going to Worst Buy tomorrow to check out the Infinity Kappas. They are 2 ohm and can handle the 166 watts my amp would be giving them, at 2 ohm. Now I just have to hear them.
