Help me decide. (GPS)
Help me decide. (GPS)
Well I've always wanted a portable GPS system. Tonight I'm actually going to order one. But I'm having a hard time deciding which one I want. I did a lot of research and came down to 2:
Garmin StreetPilot c320 vs Garmin StreetPilot i5
Both have good reviews on Cnet, under $330, nice and compact.
Do any of you have one of the gps systems I listed?
How do you like it? Accurate?
Help me decide.

i bought the tom tom like a month ago and i love it, it cost $600 but its well worth it. Its been very accurate so far but the real test will be this weekend when i go to jersey for a car meet
i had the i5 and it was amazing. I used it for my trip to L.A., then returned it because i needed the money. It's extremely accurite, and the speed rating is MAYBE 1mph off at certain times.
My favorite feature is that it adjusts your projected time to a destination based on your current rate of travel, not posted speed limits which is how some GPS devices calculate their ETA.
battery life is also excellent. I traveled from san francisco to L.A. on one set of batteries.
Get the i5.

before i got my indash gps, i had a palm zire 72 with the tom tom software and the gps receiver and i loved it, very accurate and all the roads were named even the dirt roads. plus you get a palm at the same time and it wasn't that expensive, i say go with that instead of buying a gps only. with that palm, you could go online, take pics, take videos, play videos, show pics, play mp3's, etcc............................ and you can get that for like 400-500 US$

I bought a TomTom Go 910 a month ago, great GPS. I used to have an Eclipse AVN5435 in dash GPS and prefer the TomTom over it.
Mine was expensive however at $800, but it has a built in hard drive for the maps and mp3's. It has iPod control if you buy the optional $20 cable and bluetooth for hands free phone (microphone included). Very accurate software, voice prompts are nice also (reads out street names also). Comes with a remote control so you don't have to reach over to the TomTom to make changes.
05reverB has a good idea with getting a Palm and the TomTom software, its a nice way to have a GPS setup and Palm.

Well I've made up my mind. I'm going with the Garmin i5. Nice and small (similar
to the size of a baseball). Def. a plus since I'm going to be mounting it under
my rearview mirror. Also accuracy seems to be excellent. A lot of good reviews
on the Garmin i5. At $321 it seems to be the best bang for the buck.

. it works off satelites, so as long as the gps receiver has a clear view of the sky, you'll be fine. i got mine inside the car at the corner of the driver side windshield.IMO, if you want a HU with gps, then there is a few choices, but if you want something portable, palm with tom tom software is the way to go, cause tom tom is the best software for gps plus you can use the palm for so much more than just gps, digital camera/video camera, plays music/videos/pics, internet, can install pretty much any program a computer has......

I hate doing this kind of thing, but I was thinking about selling my TomTom Go 910, so if anyone is actually interested, PM me.
I'm thinking about putting a computer in my new Accord, so the TomTom may not be needed.

another great/cheap option for those of you with laptops would be microsoft street & trips 2006 w/gps locator for 150$ CAD, so probably around 100$ US. it has everything you need.

the software is included. for 150$ CAD, you get the microsoft street & trips 2006 software + a wired GPS receiver that plugs in a USB port on your laptop. you put that gps receiver on top of your dash and it receives the sattelite signals and your laptop is a gps. and yes it talks. i had the 2005 version and i liked it. you can also buy a bluetooth receiver instead of the wired receiver you get with the software, then you wouldn't need to connect it to your laptop at all.

ya i am thinking, because my laptop is 10 yrs old, pentium, 48megs ram, 2mb video, and a sketchy usb port that only works with some stuff that has drivers for it. running win98 tho. think it will work?

wow, yeah thats pretty old, are you sure you have a USB port on a computer that old? didn't think they had them back then. if you do have one, it might work with the wired receiver, but i doubt very much that it would work with the wireless bluetooth one. im not sure of the requirements for that program, so i can't tell you if it will work or not. you can also get that software used for cheap on ebay, so you wouldn't loose too much money if you want to try it.

ya it has one in the back, i've loaded and can use flash disk and mp3 player, but it needs drivers. when you plug something in it gives the new hardware wizard and i must install drivers for it to work. ill hit best buy maybe they can tell me or at least let me return it if it doesnt work. it actually came with win95 which didnt even support usb lol. maybe it was an expansion thing when the technology was brand new.
