6.5 subs in rear deck?
hi, i've been on this forum for a little while, but this is my first post. this forum is so much help.
anyway, i have a 05 coupe with just a head unit and the stock speakers just don't produce enough bass for me. i mostly listen to hip hop, r&b and rock. i came across these mpyre audio 65x 6.5 subs and i thought they could be the solution. i don't want actual subs with box in my trunk cause i like the space. so the only place with enough clearance is the rear deck.
so my question is, how do you guys think these will sound? will they produce better bass just by sitting in the rear deck and without some custom enclosure? by better bass, i mean staying low and louder than stock. i will power these with an amp and im sure they will fit with some diy. or know better suggestions? it's either this or lower my car. not sure yet.
thanks in advance.

What's more important, your audio or having your car lower?
That said, I'd probably go with something along the lines of Adire's Extremis 6.8 inch midwoofer, or possibly even a pair of 8's in there. Don't want to lose trunk space? Infinite Baffle is the way to go on the rear deck. It'd require some work, but it'd keep your trunk space.
(To the poster above me, IB is what that is referred to, using the entire trunk as the enclosure)

you have a coupe with 6x9 and not enough bass? crazy. i have 6.5 in my sedan, amped, and its plenty for me. sounds like you just need a sub for low bass, or new speakers and a powerful amp.

I used to have subs so i guess i kinda got used to that. and yea, i am in need of low bass, which i read that after market speakers don't really produce. so i was wondering how these small subs will sound in free air. And this infinite baffle, which i have never heard before, i breifly read about it and seems like lots of work. i guess i can get it to sound good if i put enough effort. alright, thanks guys. guess i have a lot more reading to do on this.

Course you could always go with an AP(aperiodic) enclosure, but those aren't for the faint of heart. They're tough to design, blah blah blah. Here's more infor on those as well:

thanks for the links playa. i don't think im brave enough to try the ap enclosure or the IB. never worked with fiberglass before and doesn't seem like a first time diy that i can do. i read on another post that you can make enclosure and just attach that to the rear deck. would there be any problems with doing that which might discourage me from doing the set up at all.
thanks
thanks
For your application, look at an Infinity Basslink or a Bazooka tube. Actually, the Basslink is probably too big. Audiophiles will make fun of you for doing it and me for suggesting it and the SQ won't be great, but run one power wire, tap into your rear speaker leads and your done. More bass with minimal effort.
Next step up would be to do your small subs in the rear deck idea and just build a small enclosure to mount them in. Mount that to the deck, build a rack for your amp to mount next to it and it will sound good.
Maybe something like this Stealthbox
Just depends how much you want to spend, how much work you are willing to do and how important it is to you. Everything is a trade off.

i actually have wires from my previous subs so i don't have to worry about using rear speaker signals. sorry i forgot to mention that. ill definitly consider making a small enclosure and sticking that up on the deck. let me know if there's anything i should know about before i do anything. thanks for the input everyone
the mpyre 65's would be a great idea in the rear deck.
I dont think anyone here can answer whether or not they will be good, or whether or not they will be "good enough". But you are definitely on the right track!
Id enter into this with the thought that it may take a couple tries to get it just how you want.
get your amplifier in the trunk, wire everything up, get the 6's, install them freeair in the rear deck, and have at it. see how they sound.
are they missing the performance you want? add the enclosure! you can try all sorts of solutions depending on how they actually perform in the car. maybe they are perfect minus needing a little extra bottom end. nab an EQ and call it a day!
But I think your mindset is exactly where it needs to be. Id give the 6's a shot!

just remember that it might not be perfect the very first time you flip the on switch.
but maybe after an iteration or two, it'll sound absolutely awesome! So don't be discouraged if it doesn't sound sweet right out of the box!

As a side note...A lot of computer speakers are using 6" woofer for "subwoofer". It really can't compare to 10 or 12", but at least it can produce something out with an enclosure. And yes, you can expect something from it.
its a shame you are in Austin. I'd love to demo a 6.5" install I've been toying with. I got the suckers to play below 30Hz, louder than a sealed eD12A watt for watt, and have a higher overall powerhandling.
Im not saying sugisan is gonna get that IB from his rear deck, but I'd definitely agree that the install "can't compare to 10 or 12"". I blew 10 or 12" out of the water
