which speakers fit???

I was thinking about purchasing some new 6x9 for my car. I have read on this forum that some of the 6x9 don't fit due to the magnet. I was wondering which kind of speakers does everyone have?? I am planning to not have to modify anything. Please list which speakers and model you guys have in the front and back???

I went to the Crutchfield website, searched speakers by car, and only 2 sets of 6x9's came up - some cheap Kenwoods and some expensive Infinitys. So I e-mailed them and asked what was up. Here's their response:

"Thanks for your e-mail, and for shopping the Crutchfield web site.

Clearance is the issue on your rear deck for the 6" x 9" speakers. The mounting tweeter clearance is only .499". Most 6 x 9 speakers need .65" to 1" to clear the tweeter. You can custom install a few by shimming or raising the grill to fit the new speaker. If you are up for some custom work about anything is possible. Please call us an we can tell you how much space you need to fit the models. Thanks"

One way to accomodate the speakers with larger magnets is to install baffles/spacers to add some clearance. Another, tad more expensive, but very effective method would be to eliminate the cross bars (I believe honda refers to them as shocks) with a set of gas struts. This will provide you with all the clearance you'd want, and it's improve the opening of the trunk along with, should you have a spoiler, reducing the load required to close it.

Another thing to consider is you don't have to install 6X9's. You could go with a 6 or 6.5 in there and be just fine, and possibly get a better speaker for relatively the same price or cheaper. Clearance issues wouldn't be as predominant of an issue with a different size. Remember, just cause it came from the factory with them doesn't mean you have to use that size. A few members here, White Rabbit and Ludlam Theory I'm fairly certain have swapped sizes in several places. If I remember correctly, one of them had a set of 8's in the front doors at one point. Anything is possible.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time on rear fill. Actually, when I had my civic I didn't even run rear fill. I removed the rear speakers. This will improve your stage up front as well. Rear fill is more for rear seat passengers than anything else. It's not for stage. I'd recommend going with a nice set up front, adding the money you'd spend on the rear fill to the budget for the fronts, and either keep the stock speakers back there, or ditch them all together. It's going to overpower you up front if you have high blaring from the rear anyway, and the sound will seem to be coming from behind you as opposed to front and center as you'd want in an ideal stage. Technically speaking, you don't want to be able to hear where the music is coming from, you want to be engulfed by it and not be able to pinpoint a speaker or pair of speakers. Adding aftermarket rear fill will make the sound appear and sound like it's coming from behind you, mainly because it will be. Staging in the stock form in the civics suck. You can improve it with some aftermarket speakers but without relocating them, you'll never get an ideal stage. Sure, some speakers will perform well off axis, but the stage won't be perfect.

i just put in alpine 6x9's in my rear deck and took the alpine speaker cover and used that as a spacer there;s still a little space left so i might take out those cross bars and get some shocks for the trunk just so they don't hit..

you have two issues to deal with - speaker height (as referenced by the email reply from Crutchfield) with the tweeter hitting the rear deck and magnet depth with the trunk lid crossbars.

I'm running Boston NX-97's and they fit with no issues.

Baffles are pretty much spacers. I prefer to make my own from scrap wood, as you can make them whatever thickness you need, that is allowable. They go between the speaker and the mount location.
