Good Ground Under Hood

Sry for the noob question, but I bought an HID conversion kit, and have it all wired up into TYC's.

Now I kinda want to test the kit to see if I set it up properly, wiring etc BUT on the wire harness, there is a red wire and black wire.

So the red to the battery, of course
And the black to a ground

Now, the main car ground is kinda attached to where the hood latch is. Would it be ok if I simply attached this gound to that same screw ?

Also, if it isn't safe and I choose another screw anywhere - I heard you should sand down the paint, so that the ground is touching bare metal - is this something I should do ?

Thx for the help.

i know for sure sand down the paint, and i assume that you can ground it to any screw, much like an amp..

Civic my reason is that I only want to take it out and test it, I just dont want to have to grind down to the paint, just for the test.

Thats why I was wondering if I can attach it to the main ground whre the car already has a grounding wire.

red_sun is on a distinguished road
If you going to just test it you can put it on any part of the chassis you don't even need to sand you just sand it down to bare metal for a better connection.

You'll need to sand it down if it's got paint on it. Don't forget that just for testing, you can use the wires directly on the battery terminals. For the final install, don't connect the power wire to the battery unless you want the HID's on all the time! I dunno how your kit works, but you should be using a relay and tap into the + wire of your low beams existing wire socket. Then the relay will need a + tap from your battery and of course a good solid ground. Where your grounding strap is connected from the engine is good if that's an easy location to reach. Otherwise so is your - terminal on the battery.
