Ipod interface on 2006 Pioneer or Alpines.
Anybody have a new 2006 Alpine deck or 2006 Pioneer deck with an ipod hooked up??
If so, how is the interface, and how fast does the ipod react???
does it actually show the full name of the songs instead of the crappy 8 characters like it used to (pioneer, not sure if alpines did this or not)????
I know its a long shot, because these decks just came out, but you never know.
The reason I'm asking is because I might get one of these decks. I don't even have an ipod yet, lol. I hate re-burning my CD-R over and over everytime I want to update songs. I just want to hook up my ipod to my mac mini, and add more songs. Much easier that way, and its a lot more convienient
Also, how's the SQ compared to a standard mp3 disc??
Thanks, Phu.

i have an alpine with kca420i.i think it's the same functions with the new alpine head unit but without buying kca420i w/c is a good deal.just have to buy the wires.with my alpine the song display will scroll down.
sound quality is decent - my cda-9811 has a "media expander" (mx) button that will boost the high and low end, which helps.
navigating the iPod via the head unit interface is difficult at best - I've been using the AI-NET input with cabling and prefer to control from the Ipod itself, which is mounted in the tray just below the ebrake.

media expander makes everything sound like crap...
i have the kca-420i and i've compared the exact same mp3 from the ipod to the same mp3 played from the cd player. w/ the kca-420i, i noticed that some of the higher frequencies are lost...this is prolly because the DAC inside the ipod is cheap crap...overall though, the sound is still way superior to FM radio...

I know the ipod layout was not that good for 2005. Hence, I started this thread stating 2006 alpine models. Please stay on topic.
I'm not trying to be rude, I just want some info on the new line up with the ipod adapter.

192kbit ripped w/ a lame encoder...
cda 9835 w/ kca 420i

i also have a cda 9811 which i use in my room...awesome deck but again mx makes things sound like crap...leave MX off and everything sounds awesome...

i just picked up a new alpine headunit with ipod interface and everything and i am extremely impressed, searching through songs is just as fast as the ipod and sound quality is much improved over stock.

i have to agree, the few 06 alpines i've installed with the full speed ipod connections are very slick. it was just as easy to navigate as using the clickwheel, and it scrolled the full song title. almost made me wanna get an alpine, almost.
Even w/ the older models, I think the connection speed is fine w/ the IPod adaptor, it's just the interface/search feature that sucked.
Nice to know they actually did something about it (I wonder if Pioneer did the same)

MX functionality is specifically for MP3 and compressed audio which is significant to the conversation. I'm unsure whether new models have it or not so it's worth mentioning.

If you don't have useful comments, don't be an a$$. I'm trying to stay on topic, so I can find the info I need. Plus I did mention 2006 models, not 2005.
Thanks.

guess I have to hash it out with expanded detail to make my point. You specifically asked about how an ipod sounds through Alpine head units and about hooking it up with 2006 models. As the MX functionality BUILT INTO ALPINE DECKS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF MP3 PLAYBACK WHICH DIRECTLY AFFECTS "HOW AN IPOD SOUNDS" then my point has full relevance, that my Alpine is an older model doesn't mean anything as the CDA-9820XM has MX functionality.
Given that I own both two Ipods and I have two Alpine head units, (with and without the MX functionality) I can personally tell you that MP3's IN MY OPINION sound better with it than without. Turboslug has also voiced his opinion.
Ignore my reply if you want.

The 2006 Alpine models connect to an ipod with a USB cable, it runs full speed, digital sound quality, just like through your headphones. There are no playlist size limitations as there were with 04 and 05 models, and there is full control identical to the interface that is on the actual ipod, it displays the full song name and everything.
The connection also charges the iPod.
As far as SQ versus an Mp3 CD, how it sounds depends on the bitrate of your Mp3s and the type of speakers in your car. In most cases, it's going to sound just like an Mp3 CD or slightly better.

there was noticeable quality loss w/ the kca-420i...
It reads the song files off the iPod. I'm not quite sure what you mean about the line out...that would be the headphone port on the ipod, and both the KCA-420i and the new interface plug into the dock connector. There should have been no quality loss before either, since it was taking the digital audio signal directly from the ipod and processing it within the HU or the KCA-420i box. Maybe you had low bitrate Mp3's?
I used a KCA-420 briefly in my car and I didnt notice any quality loss. It sounded slightly better than Mp3 cds, and I was running it through a CDA 9835, with a PCX4125 amping Quart Q series...

i have a kca-420i w/ a 9835 and i can hear the difference between mp3's from played from the cd inside the 9835 to mp3's played from the ipod w/ the kca-420i. i'm not even using the best component speakers and i can hear the difference. i only have type r comps. the quality from the kca-420i isn't bad but i can hear the difference.
you lose quality when using the kca-420i because of several reasons...one of them is because the ipod does the digital to analogue conversion with the ipod's crappy DAC. another reason quality can be lost is because the analog signal gets processed too many times. the analogue signal starts from the ipod's DAC then gets sent through the KCA-420i, then through the deck's preamp for more processing, etc....by the time the sound gets to the speakers, quality has been lost...
what i was wondering is if the new interface connects to the ipod through the USB interface in the idock port. if it does, it would be interesting if the alpine deck pulls the digital MP3 files from the ipod then does the DAC conversion inside the deck. this way you'll get the same quality as an mp3 read from the deck's cd player.

The only thing I don't like about the new alpines. Why 2V preouts??

I went and played with um both at a stereo shop, honestly i thought the pioneer ran a lot better. Besides all the new alpines arent looking to good. I didnt like how the new ones are. So thats why i went with the pioneer.

The two decks I'm considering are:
1) Alpine 9857
2) Pioneer 7800
Personally I've always found the look of pioneers to be tacky and cheap. the finish is too flashy and just blah. Alpine has always been plain and straight forward with a quality finish.not to mention i like the layout and features with a great price.
