New Alpine decks are out...no more glidetouch garbage?
New Alpine decks are out...no more glidetouch garbage?
the 2006 line of alpine decks are now on the manufacturer's website...
looks as though alpine is tossing glidetouch into the trash? it seems there's only one deck that has the feature for 2006. i like the old style quick search/scroll feature...IMO, glidetouch was very slow and cumbersome...
i still like my 9835 but DVD mp3's would be nice to have...
The 2006 Spring catalog can be found here: http://www.alpine-usa.com/images/pro...alog_Final.pdf

yea, the new clarions are the same, just blue instead of white. woohoo. I actually am happy i have white cuz I'm converting my interior lights to white so haha! i paid 350 for a $700, for a "discontinued" deck that is the same as the new one, i just dont have to convert blue to white
Theyve got a lot of cool **** coming though, like the bluetooth interface, if your cells got bluetooth (mine does) it will interface directly with the headunit, displaying phone numbers and crap, and allowing you to dial right thru it. pretty sick. Their new amps, after looking at the detailed specs are VERY nice. Cant hate them no matter how hard you may try. They make nice ****. Not to mention the prices on the Multimedia units arent all that expensive...translate those into dealer costs and possibly ebay prices and you can get into QUALITY mobile video for a little investment. A++ Alpine, still love ya.

Ok here we go
...
The 9965 is from 2005, that's why it is the only one with GlideTouch. It may not have actually hit the market in 05, as I have yet to have seen one, but they were definitely introduced in 05, as they are in the 05 catalog I have at home.
DVA-9861: perfect! not quite a DVA-9965, not quite a CDA-9857, but a perfect medium. They needed something like this, I think the 9965 is too much for most people, and the 9860 (I think that's the model number) was kind of plain.
The rest of the decks... well, they're decks. I don't expect much to have changed over 05. I'm glad they got rid of GlideTouch, that feature was the ***** and I'm glad Alpine knew that as well. Bluetooth capability is also awesome, definitely a giant step forward of integrating technology. Alpine isn't the only one with Bluetooth, Pioneer also came out with a unit with this feature, and I'm sure there's others.
No IVA-D9xx. I fully expect Alpine to come out with a replacement for the 901 sometime this year. I have no reason to think this other than there is a giant hole in their product line without it. It needs to hit the market, and I'd bet money on the fact that it will. The IVA-W200 and IVA-D100 are nice products too, they definitely have a place in the product lineup.
PMD-B100. Neat. Probably very high quality and very useful, but will be very expensive. I think it's cool but I don't think the cool factor is going to justify the price that I would expect for that thing. There are a million other similar products that have been on the market for a while that will do just as well for less money. Something like the Clarion NICE would have been... nice... to see.
PDX amps... stackable? Sweet! I don't know why, but I just think that stackable amps are cool ****.
Nobody mentioned the KCA-620M. This is the first time I've seen something like that in the mainstream market and I think it's a wicked idea. If you didn't catch what it does, it gives you a USB port to plug in a flash drive/mp3 player so you aren't forced to use an iPod.
KCE-422i? What's the difference from the 420i? Is it just faster?
No features listing in the catalog? Boo. I was having trouble with the Alpine website from work but I'll check when I get home.
No new F#1? Boo
I need some new masturbatory material. But I guess the current line isn't that old so you can't really expect them to replace it yet.

I would say 2 reasons.
1. The obvious, to persuade you to buy the higher model decks.
2. To keep the price of the lower model decks down. It's a reasonable assumption to say that people running the lower model decks won't have systems that are as high end as systems that run off the higher model decks, so they went with weaker preouts to keep the price down.

This might be a bit late, but I just got the CDA-9856, with the KCE-422i cable, and the package for the cable states that it's "Hi-Speed". Now, I've heard of the lag problems that are sometimes out there with the iPods, so maybe this is Alpine's answer to it? Dunno. Just thought I'd throw that in. I plan on testing the cable out tonight (got it all installed yesterday), so, we'll see...

For Alpine and Kenwood, they are offering a Bluetooth box. It includes a mic and plugs into the cd changer port. Functions vary depending on deck, but all of them will allow you answer handsfree with the sound coming from your stereo speakers and the music muted. Others will allow you to transfer your phone book to the radio unit and dial from it. Clarion, Pioneer, and a few others have units that are in production stages, but not finalized yet.
Basically, the aftermarket is attempting to offer all the safety features of the best OEM stereos.
On a side note, saw Pioneer's Z1 at Vegas and it is awesome, you can look up a place to go, it will also bring up the phone number as well as directions, and you can use it to automatically call the place.
Really the only thing you need to do is charge the phone. From a safety standpoint, this makes a lot of sense, totally integrated hands free.

the high speed connection is a very nice feature. way better than the add on interface unit that alpine has. I was testing it out on a customers car and i could scroll through artist/title/album lists as fast as if i was using the clickwheel interface.
