Custom hardwire for MP3 player
Custom hardwire for MP3 player
I'm getting a mp3 player for christmas and i want to set my car up for it. I know how to hook it up to the aux in on my head unit. What i want to do is have a jack in the dash that looks clean, either rca jacks or preferably a headphone jack. There is a blank panel left of the power source in my dash that would be perfect to put the jack(s) in. I was wondering if anyone has done this themselves and if you have what parts did you use? I found some parts at partsexpress.com but I just want to see what everyone else has done.
So basicaly have a jack in the dash to plug a mp3 player into. Whos done it? post pics if you have them

make sure it is a auxillary that is for all your speakers. mine only has front speaker inputs. but other than what you are saying i have seen it many ways. know one guy who took his dock for an ipod and mounted it to the dash and drilled a small hole for the wires to go in the dash and the connections were in the dash. looked good.

there are several ways to do what you're trying to do... easiest way would be to just pop out one of the dummy panels you were talking about, drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the RCA/headphone jack you want to install in the center, force the jack through (should be a nice snug fit), and then for some extra staying power, use a little bit of hot glue on the back side to keep it in place... be careful when drilling the hole, cuz if you screw it up and comes out like an oval and the jack doesn't fit right, people will laugh at you... they might even point and everything...
hot glue is easily peeled off once dry so you can salvage your $.79 jack should you ever decide to get rid of your car, but it will keep the jack from pulling loose if you ever decided to yank the **** out of the cord while disconnecting your MP3 player...
i have done similar installs in several different vehicles, most recently was when i installed a 5.6" LCD monitor in my glove compartment... i molded in a trio of RCA inputs that were hooked to my DVD player's auxiliary inputs, so when i connected my camcorder, i could watch the video on the monitor and have 5.1 channel surround sound of whatever was being played back...
hope this helps... and if you have no idea what i'm talking about, hit me up and i will try to draw a half-assed representation in Paint or something like that... good luck!

Sorry, had to.
To the original question, you can get some RCA jacks at Radio Shack that have nuts on them. Drill a hole and tughten the nut down to the plastic. No need for hot glue.

i was thinkin the same thing lol... didn't know about the RCAs with nuts, that's pretty kick ***... i thought hot glue was innovative (still better than duct tape i reckon), but that's like 47 times cooler...

depending on how you want to hook it up, there's 2 ways, hook it up using 2 rcas or just a female ministereo.
the rcas i would prefer so i'll start with that, buy a male to female stereo rca cable, then whereever you want to make the mount, drill 2 holes the size of the actual plug (the metal part) not the rubber surround. Then, push the plugs through and hot glue theback so they bont pull out.
ministereo? buy a male rca to female minstereo, then basically follow the same thing for the rcas... i would rather the rcas cuz it would look a lot better and be a hell of a lot easier for a clean install

I filled it out. When resized it to upload, for some ungodly (not the lady on Wife Swap unGODly) reason it decided to remove the edits I made into filling it out. Why exactly do you have the gauge pod? Does it serve a purpose? And the chrome on the interior is a bit much. The diamond plate floormats are so TFATF. Regardless, I've got a solution to your iPod mounting woes. If you want to fabricate a holder, you can purchase some sticks of aluminum bar. It's easily bent to whatever shape you desire with some simple tools (hammer, pliars, screwdriver, jigsaw rotozip, etc to perforate our line and then bend it exact, and a bench vise). Lots of those are unnecssary, but helpful. Another option would be to purchase one of several mounts available. There is a cupholder mount you can buy that slides into your cupholder and you put the iPod in the cradle. It's about $10 on eBay. I'm sure you have your reasons for putting the connection there, but where does the iPod go while you're driving? Do you just lay it on the dash, or in your lap?

I bought the holder for $10 and it works good enough for me and i wouldnt want to make one cause it would look really bad, oh and the gauge pod, one is volts cause i went through 3 batteries already and i had the car not even 2 years, and im going turbo soon so when i saw the gauges for cheap i bought them, is that a problem?

im calm i just dont like it when someone calls my car rice which it isnt even close too, and yea i didnt buy a $100 holder but it does the job, a real good one lol.
well, you've only been on the site for 2 months, so here's a useful tip, rice is just basically someone saying they dont like your car without explaining. Most of the time when someone calls a car rice, u can pinpoint the riceness right away, your car isn't that bad. IMO, it's a little much...if it were me, i'd mount the ipod a little better and it'd look a hell of a lot cleaner; but then, I'm an electronics guy so i'd always find some spiffy way to do it...

yea usually when someone says rice it looks about 100 times worse than mine does, but thanks for the info, i just wanted a place to put the ipod where i can reach it to change the songs and see which songs are actually playing, i thought about the cup holder one but i guess i picked this one instead, i really dont want to drill holes in my dash....i guess i might change to the cup holder unless u can think of a better spot to mount it?
i would mount rcas on the extra panel next to the cig lighter (i'll get a pic when i'm done posting) and put the rcas there, then if u ever need to get rid of the car, just go buy a new plug from honda like 5 bucks max, then you can have direct rcas into your deck, if someone has a laptop, psp, ps2, etc you can just set it on the passenger seat and such, i think it'd look a lot cleaner than just a cord.
