Does a Car Deck attract robbers to your ride?
Hey, I was thinking of getting an mp3 deck installed in my car and i have subwoofers as well but me and my friend were talking about this and i realized that if i didnt get a deck and kept the subwoofers, no one would know i had the subs and therefore robbers would stay away...but if i got a deck installed then it would attract robbers to steal the deck and there is a greater chance that they will break into my trunk to steal the subwoofers...
let me know what u guys think....is it a good idea to get a car deck installed or no?

remove the faceplate of your deck when you get out
no point getting a better deck without better speakers. Stock ones really suck badly

of course dont be a p*$$y. thats like saying you wont go to vegas because your car could break down in the desert. dont make decisions based on fear. just remove the face plate. and get an alarm.

To answer your question....Yes. If you get a good headunit, there are always fuc*ers who are gonna try and steal it because they are to lazy to get off their asses and get jobs. To be safe, just remove the face plate, get and alarm, and make sure you have tinted windows.

you should turn down the volume before you enter any parking lot, example, dont pull into a movie theater parking lot blasting tunes, attracting attention. you will probably be gone for 2 hours in the theater, and anyone thats scoping out the lot will notice you first and realize they have the time to break in and take more than just a HU.
get an alarm, my local shop does one for $100 installed, if you consider that a stereo, speakers, amp, subs, all that stuff adds up, $100 for security is not something to overlook. window tint is also a cheap method for security (also helps keep your cars interior a little cooler).
remove the face on the unit (if its removeable). try to take it with you, but if you dont want to "lug" the face around all day, hide it in the car. hopefully a potential thief will see no face on the unit, and move on.
also, dont fool yourself about the HU, thats not the only reason thieves break into cars, CD's, wallet/cash, other crap laying on the back seat. simple "smash and grab" is common, dont give thieves a reason to take any of your stuff.
at the end, regardless of what you have, a determined thief will get it, so final word, INSURANCE!

with my luck - my car got broken into even tho my faceplate was hidden away - i guess he felt lucky and he hit the jackpot! coz once he broke it he *tried* to take my glasses, cds, hat and my headunit. anyway the cops caught him so i got my **** back.
anyway my precautions:
1. lock the trunk from the inside of the car - so if anyone breaks in they cannot easily open the trunk - they have to break it open and can get easily noticed if he tries to do that.
2. as far as faceplate - whatever everyone else suggested!

when you leave the house you dont think man people know i have a tv because of the sat dish. i mean if your friend said that i hope you would call him an idiot. so get what makes you happy. and make sure your insurance is paid.
only play your stereo when you're a good distance away from your house. parking lots where you leave your car for a long time... dont play music too loud around there.
most of this stuff is common sense.... so use it to protect yourself.

i feel lucky... i blast my music everywhere i go, i don't take off my face plate, and sometimes i forget to activate my alarm... good thing it activates by itself... plus i lived in the bad part of miami, and havent had a single brake in... i hope i didnt just jinx myself.
good suggestions...i think i will get an alarm system installed...i personally like the 2 way reciever thing...i know a place that does it for $399 installed...and then i will get that mp3 deck...and i will keep in mind all the pointers like not turning the sound up is certain areas...the only thing that scared my was the fact that it happend to my friends sol...but he didnt follow the pointers that u guys mentioned...though he was only gone for 5 mins...
anyways...i am gonna go for it...might just get a dvd deck...lol...but first thing is the alarm!
thanks for the help!

Best and safest way...leave all the doors unlocked. That way you save thousands in damages because the thief won't mess up your windows, doors, trunk, etc. The more you try and protect it, the more they want it and will break everything they can to get it. All I have is a small amp in the trunk so I don't care, $200 gone if they steal. I also have a shaved trunk so that helps out, but again they'll prolly just break it open in frustration.
In my old jetta, thieves broke the small window to open the door and steal the deck. Well the cost to replace the window was more than the deck was worth.

Oh yea and alarm does NOTHING. Nobody cares when they hear it, heck I hear 5 alarms a day and don't even bother getting up cause its always idiots that like to set theirs off. Unless you have a pager and can run out to the car...in which case you better hope they don't pull a gun on you.

I think there is an increased risk... but not enough of a risk to ever stop me from doing it.... they could see your deck and assume that the faceplate is in your glovebox or center console or they could see the deck and think hmmmm, I wonder what other goodies are hiding inside this thing
you can go ultra-stealthmode and get an ipod and an interface for the stock HU if theft is really that much of a concern to you
if you really want to get some perspective, I live in the city with the highest auto crime rate in the english speaking world. I've only had my car broken into once (it was my old car and it was right in front of my house). Do I take extreme security precautions you may ask? no I don't.... I have 2 units in my dash (DVD and head unit) neither of which have removable face, I have Phoenix Gold, Eclipse and West Coast Extreme SPL (my club which has a huge speaker as the logo) decals along my rear side window and on my back window, pretty risky if you ask me. I just park my car inside at night (I'm lucky enough to have that luxury and I don't leave it in any heaty public places (ie. mall) for long periods of time. I leave my car sitting all day while at work, but our parking lot is patrolled by guards with assault rifles (yes, really, don't ask where I work). So if I can do all that and not get broken into just by watching where I leave my car, you will be more than fine

One thing smart one. If you leave a gun visible and you are not there, they can still take it. If they use it against someone else and find the gun with the serial number you would be in trouble. So leaving a gun visible isnt a great idea.
