Alpine sux
Alpine sux in the "new" model like cda-9853 & 9855, I'm not bs coz my 9853 is broken within a month, then I brought it back to the store today and the staff told me that many people got problem in the new version. They also felt so disappointed subject to Alpine too, so anyone who owned 9833 or 9835 is good coz you had the best line of Alpine not those crappy new style(slider button). And now I got a Pioneer DEH-P80MP which is the top of the line and I fully satisfied it.
I think that you just had bad luck. Even if they are 99% in QC, you could get the one of a hundred that F's UP. I don't own Alpine, but have and had nothing but good luck when I did. When my Sirius subscription runs out, I'm getting a 9853.

I got a 9833 and I love it. I never liked the new ones for some reason. That slide bar thing is not really all that appealing, and they are quite hard to use. That's only my opinion though.
I have the CDA-9855 and I have not had anything go wrong with it yet and once you use it for a while you get use to the slide bar and it becomes really easy to use. The slide bar also helps out alot if you have the ipod hooked up to the headunit.
I have a 9853 and I like it so far. The slider is a bitch and I wish I would've gotten a regular one, but I like everything else a lot so far. The only thing i'm having trouble with is properly tuning it. It makes my speakers sound great, but I can't get one setting I like for my sub. The crossover is new to me. I need to just sit down and play with it.
