Sony X-Plod HUs
I was just wondering what you guys thought about the quality of Sony Xplod head units. My dad works for sony and gets a 60% discount on all car audio products. I bought one about a year ago for for my old truck at 60 bucks, listed at Best Buy for $150 or so, and it sounded pretty good. But whatever I buy now will be considerably more because of my tax return. So, would it be a good idea to invest in an xplod HU, or just put it all into an Alpine HU?
Thanks.
*EDIT*
Oh also, out of curiosity, what are the stock speaker sizes in the front and back of our cars? I tried searching, but can never find an answer. I have an 04' LX sedan.
Thanks.

hehe this is a bad subject here...I can only tell you my personal preference. I dont like sony ive had very bad experience with sony car audio products. I would never recommend any sony car audio crap.
I would recommend Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion (not the prettiest things but very good quality).

xplod couldn't be a more accurate name for sony's equipment... it'll break on ya real quick- not to mention sounding like crap. stay away from sony- look at alpine or eclipse. When it comes to car audio a general rule of thumb is that if a company has to make their equipment flaming red and all flashy to sell it, what does that say about the quality of the equipment? (same applies to huge chrome plated flames
)
) Sony's speakers and subs and amplifiers are really bad, its head units aren't as bad, I had one installed into a '91 Mazda 929 a while back and it functioned relatively well, never had any problems w. it, looked pretty, nice LCD.

I bought a Sony Xplod HU used and it wouldnt read CDs properly, so I took it to get fixed at a radio repair shop (which took two months), and even after being professionally fixed and returned to "as good as new" condition it had problems. The main problem I encountered is that it would not read CDs when it was cold outside. This was a big problem when I went to school in Durango, CO. I have a Kenwood now, and I couldnt be happier with it.

I had a sony,
no real problems with it, it didnt like crappy CDs ( burnt )
sound quality was alright, but as soon as I got my alpine I realized what I was missing.
If you are on a budget, and want something flashy then go for it.
You want SQ get clarion, alpine, pioneer, eclipse.

sony car audio = garbage.
everything else besides home theater is good though.
alpine and pioneer is the way to go.

I use to have a Sony, it started skipping a lot after less than a year. It seemed worse when it got hot, I'm not really sure. I have a Pioneer now and it works great, no problems at all yet.

you kinda have to own a sony to really understand how crappy they really are, my first HU was a sony, then a theif decided he wanted it more than i did, so i got an alpine, the difference was incredible.
Last time I had this much fun some furniture got broken!

Read this post:
I had a sony Xplod head unit before in my last car hooked up to some cheapo $40 pioneer speakers and they sounded pretty darn good. I was happy.
Now I have a Clarion DVD player and on the stock speakers notice a huge difference. I even hooked up the old speakers (Pioneers) and they sounded amazing.
If you never had a nice HU before you wont mind a Sony; But once you get a better one you would not buy a Sony again. Just dont expect sound quality from a Sony HU.
It is worth the extra $50 - $100 for a nicer HU though!
Understand?
If you want nice...and under $350 then get one of these:
//Alpine CDE-9845
Clarion ProAudio DXZ555MP
Alpine CDA-9847
Alpine CDA-9830
Clarion DB455MC
I highly recommend one of these 2 though:
Alpine CDA-9853
Clarion ProAudio DXZ655MP

sedans have 6.5 inch speakers all around, but the door speakers are tricky cause you're most likely gonna need a spacer to make it fit.

You know, I swear by many Sony products - Trinitron CRT monitors, DVD players, TVs, my home reciever, playstation, etc. etc. That's why I'm so surprised at how shitty thier car stuff is. It truly sucks. I tell people all the time, I try not to judge. If you like audiobahn, cool. If you think your pioneer subs sound good, right on. But Sony, it sucks. I'll judge it and I'm proud. It's built like ****, sounds like **** and frankly, is ****. So, my advice? Use your dad's disco on everything else sony. Stick to Alpine, Pioneer, Nak, CLarion,. Maybe find someone who works at Tweeter, bestbuy, Circuit CIty or something that want's a discount on something SOny in echange for a hookup on an Alpine HU. . . .

If you buy Sonys cheap stuff you get the made in Taiwan junk. Same as Clarion Alpine Pioneer etc. Sony High end stuff is Awsome. They have been the leader is electronics for over 50 years. There is a reason for this.
If you get the good stuff you will love it. I bought a C90 4 years ago (if you don`t know what it is you have never been part of a real competion). The C90 is still one of the best reference decks in the world. up there with Eclipse top end stuff and Alpine F1 deck. C90 is discontinued now but you can still find them. New decks like the Sony 7815 has Burr Brown outputs and a triple 4 volt. As good as you can ask for for under $400 CAN.
