for those looking for a different sort of trunk install (and it really works well!)
Ive been seeing lots of threads over the past while about people wanting trunk install ideas, meddling with aesthetics, performance, etc.
Got an uncommon idea for you. downfire your subwoofers. it works damn well, I promise. I find it to be a wonderful mix of the benefits of forward firing and rear firing, and I find rattle is minimized, especially compared to upfiring.
its accomplished by making a false floor. nothing under it, no tub, no box, nothing if you dont want. then build your box as normal, its placed in the common spot: butted up aainst the rear seats.
then simply cut two holes: one in the box to mount the subwoofer to, then a larger one in the floor to accomodate the entire outer diameter of the subwoofer. a cable strap holding the box to the floor will keep it fomr bouncing around, and the snug fit between the floor and subwoofer will keep it from sliding around. (I used backstrapping)
I cut a hatch opening in the classic location (right in front of the box) as access, other guys may wish to cut a hole there to show amplifiers in the spare tire well, or other equipment, or have spare tire access, or leave it without a cutout (dunno what this will do for rattle or bass output quantifiably).
I like this install for two reasons:
#1: performance. It has as much output as rearfiring with nearly the clarity of frontfiring, and no cancellation issues in my car.
#2: aesthetics. I cna screw amplifiers or processors to the back of the box and make a trim panel so it looks all fancy when I fold the seats down. Or I can screw the amps to the front of the box and have a trim panel so it looks all nice and fancy when I open the trunk. or I can leave both blank, cram everything on the top of the box and add trim so you see NO equipment from either the cabin or the trunk, just clean paneling.
I am very impressed, and recommend even just trying this if you have the ability to.

Some guy at my shop dropped $8000 for a custom install.. pretty much, he said here's the money, these are the components of the system I want, suprise me on how it's installed. We made the the "top" of the box out of lexan so you can see through it when you put the rear seats down.. it was a pretty sweet install. I wish I had pictures. Anyways though, good points.. rep for you

none, its ugly as poop right now. different installs have been going in so much lately I dont care to improve aesthetics. but youve seen those installs all round the site, with forward firing subwoofers, rear firing, it all looks like anyways, just with a blank box surface. nothing really to see.
except for what seems to be a simple wedge box with no subwoofer attached with amplifiers and signal processors screwed to every surface, hodge podge wiring everywhere, etc etc etc.
no, theres no way id document this, itd take away from my rep ;p
sounds bitchin though.
